When my friends Cris Rutledge and his wife Ramona, the driving force behind one of my favorite BG bands The Cartoons offered to let me ride with them to the Pavement show at the Ryman Tuesday night, I couldn’t say no despite being sick over the weekend. I had somehow never seen the 90’s indie rock icons.

Cris and Ramona were the perfect companions for my first Pavement show, both being uber-fans; Cris actually proposed to Ramona onstage at a Pavement gig in Chicago in 2022. We got to Nashville by 7, grabbed a bite next door to the venue, and following a perfunctory opening set by Soccer Mommy, Pavement took the stage at 8:15 like they had something to prove. Their set wasn’t heavy on hits tonight; my friend and Grimey’s co-owner Doyle Davis told me that was the Monday night set. But tonight they played like a fire was burning within, loose, jammy and leaning into more obscure song choices and both Doyle and Cris seemed to be in agreement that tonight’s set was the Chef’s Kiss of the two.

As an added bonus, I ran into my musician pals Bobby Bare Jr. and Pat Sansone and as Pat said with a smile, “Everyone’s here tonight, man.” Cris and Ramona fittingly went back stage afterwards and got the band to sign their poster where they ran into Cage The Elephant’s Matt Shultz making it clear that a lot of Nashville rock royalty was in attendance. While they schmoozed, I walked outside to see an incredible full moon rising over Broadway next to the Ryman, a mojo rising befitting of the extraordinary performance we witnessed tonight.

More than three decades after they ruled the indie rock landscape, Pavement is clearly still firing on all cylinders.

Had a great weekend hanging out @_donnasbar_ playing some music with my best buds @beachglow_music

A warm thank you to everyone who showed out. It was rad seeing some faces I haven’t seen in quite some time, as well as making some new friends along the way. I feel very thankful to be surrounded by such a supportive community who digs the music we create.

A big thanks to @joseph_vjp for coming through last minute to capture the night, the photos came out sick!

We are finally coming down from our farewell show last weekend. We all want to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s supported us and believed in us on our journey as a band together, we couldn’t have made any of it happen without you. Also, a big thank you to @_donnasbar_ for always being such great hosts and for always being so easy and welcoming to work with. We have always felt so honored and grateful to have a place where people can come congregate, connect, and feel safe while being able to support and witness so many different artists under one roof. Truly a gem of a spot to have in town. While this may be the “end” of our chapter as a band, feel free to follow our other projects @beachglow_music and Leach (bowling green hardcore punk) if you want to keep following our music journey. This may be goodbye for now, but not forever. Peace and love - Shane, Luke, and Matt

Went to Chicago.

Saw some friends. Saw a giant metal bean. Watched some rasslin. Ate a lot of good food. Looked at some art. Thought about that art. Walked for miles. Witnessed some jazz history. Drank some drinks. Ate more good food. Slayed a dragon. Bought some stuff. Said goodbye. Flew home.

10/10 would do it again.
