On @everythingcookbooks this week, we spoke to @francesbacadesign and had a long chat about cookbook covers. It prompted me to go through my collection and pull the covers that stopped me in my tracks when I first saw them.

First up is this one from Perla Myers. I learned about this book The Seasonal Kitchen from @debbiebernedesign in her book Cookbooking and soon after had to go buy it on eBay. I’m not usually a fan of a smiling person on the cover — they can usually feel a bit staged and generic. This one is anything but! Shot by fashion photographer Art Kane in the early 1970s, it feels both classic but also reminiscent of the time and place. The vertical Helvetica text completes the package.

When @jcfiedler first posted Kimi’s Kitchen by @kimi_swimmy with this cover image by @gromlet , I gasped. The way she’s swimming upwards with her speared fish but suspended in water, bubbles coming from her snorkel. It’s just so immersive and unlike any cookbook cover I’ve ever seen.

Another cover with a person on the cover done in a unique way with photograph by @doaaelkady_ . Author @ifahmed of Soomaaliya told us it was important to her to show that the book, subtitled A Cookbook, was about more than just food. Wearing traditional Somali fabric, she stands against a vibrant blue background holding a mortar and pestle she brought back from Somalia. The photograph is cropped showing her from the neck down. Ifrah said all of these choices would help Somali people recognize instantly that this book was for them.

The vibe! The typeface! The contrast! Author @yooeating has a great post on Substack about the making of the cover of Soju Party. I love the tight composition showing a collection of different color glass bottles, a hand pouring a drink, and a sliver of something delicious that had been enjoyed. This shot by @nothinginpassing has so much energy to it and really feels like a party, even though you only see one actual human. This is also a great example of word and image working together beautifully.

In a world of covers with impeccably styled, plated food images, I love how the cover of A Bird in the Hand by @dianahenryfood , with a photo by @laurajayneedwards

DISPATCH: BIG ISLAND | Field notes from Ambassador Nicole Gormley

“Spread across different parts of Hawaii, we found a small weather window in the middle of a particularly windy, rainy winter and decided to dive a few of our favorite spots on Big Island.

So I was thrilled when Free Fly tapped photographers @perrinjames1, @mikeborchard, and me for a feral mission to field-test and shoot a few new pieces with one important caveat: the adventure mattered more than staging any shots.

We headed to South Point, a place I’d wanted to dive for a long time because of that out-there feeling.

That moment when you finally settle into an adventure is one of the best feelings in the world. You forget about everything else. And because things can go wrong out there, and you’re so remote, you have to be present.

Some trips give you content. Some give you yourself back. This one did a little bit of both.

Till the next feral mission,
Nicole”
