If whales, snails,
dogs, cats
Chrysler and Nixon
can be saved,
the lives of Black men
are priceless
and can be saved.
We should be able
to save each other….

an excerpt from For My Own Protection — Essex Hemphill (1992)

@ddriffin recited this text during his conversation with @dmalebr and it has echoed in my mind since last Friday’s afternoon with @nativesonnow

I’m grateful that @emilwilbekin had the vision (and obedience) to lend his contacts + curatorial eye to curating an intentional space for impactful conversation. The work continues but we are not fighting alone! ✨

Thank you @essencefest for having me at the Hollywood House-Costume & Culture panel. Watching two of my friends and Mentors @fresh2impress & @mercedes_cook_ discuss our love for Costume Design, the process of storytelling through the Art of clothing, concurring creative challenges while collaborating with with fellow artist during a production, breaking down a script, and the heart and grit it takes to make it in this industry was truly inspiring. I am so proud & so full 🤍. May God continue to bless us with this gift that keeps on giving 💫e
