Why would anyone wait 3 months to check their progress, when you can see it live on your cell phone?

While hemoglobin A1c is readily available and low cost, it is just an average of numbers and doesn't tell the full story.

But CGM does.

Continuous glucose monitors (CGM) are available by prescription or over-the-counter to use for monitoring glucose in the interstitial fluid. The reading refreshes every 2 to 5 minutes, so it can reveal trends, direction, and give warning of high or low blood sugars, which is something A1C can't do. And can help you make health decisions faster.

We also know people have variable red blood cell life spans, and some people are higher glycators than others - why Hgba1c isn't best as a sole indicator of glycemic achievement. Correlating GMI from CGM or reviewing measurements from it such as Time in range, time below range, or time above range is more helpful if you're troubleshooting.

Personally, I use a combination of A1C, BGM, CGM , and my patients' story about how they're feeling, when it comes to managing diabetes meds and making dosing decisions .

Such a fun weekend at TCOYD San Diego helping my friend @kellyuselesspancreas with Grown Up Type 1 💙 I loved meeting so many new people and hearing their stories.

One thing this weekend reminded me: you can never stop learning with Type 1. No matter how long you’ve had it, there’s always something new to learn, a different perspective, or something you didn’t know.

And if you’re an adult with T1D looking for more connection, make sure you follow @grownupt1ds , a nonprofit bringing adults with Type 1 together and building community.

Second year at TCOYD San Diego!

Got to lead two sessions this weekend and bring one of our signature YJMT activities, “To Whoever Wrote That,” back to the conference.

Also got to spend the weekend catching up with so many people, meeting new ones, and learning about all of the new technology, research, and advancements happening in diabetes right now.

Thank you @tcoyd for having me back for another year. Such a fun weekend and already excited for the next one.
