My daughter is currently working as part of the team doing restoration on buildings in Toronto’s Distillery District, the largest collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture in North America.

This week they started on the Gooderham & Worts Stone Distillery building.

First constructed in 1859, it’s the oldest and largest building in the complex. It was constructed with limestone from Kingston, shipped to Toronto via schooner along Lake Ontario.

It’s also said to be one of Toronto’s most haunted buildings.

On October 26, 1869, an explosion in the fermentation cellar caused a fire that gutted the building, blew the roof off, and sent massive chunks of limestone and timbers flying into nearby Lake Ontario.

Flames lit up the city and the surrounding countryside. It was said that the flames were brighter than the gaslight streetlights, even 50 miles away!

Fortunately, the building didn’t collapse, and distillery workers were able to get the building back into working order within six months.

Now, almost exactly 157 years later, my daughter is uncovering soot that hasn’t seen the light of the day since the original repairs. They can still smell the effects of the fire.

We reviewed the history of the building before they started working on it, so the mysterious blackness they uncovered wasn’t a mystery to them.

I’m so proud of them and the work they’re doing! I’m also happy that they’re playing a part in preserving the area’s history.

If you go to the @distillerywintervillage this year, take a moment to take in the architecture and keep an eye out for the crews working to ensure we can enjoy this site for another 150 years!

On Sunday, May 24th the @trca_hq @citybrampton @bramgrowgreen Parks & Forestry, and Heart Lake Turtle Troopers joined forces to plant 250 native trees and shrubs at Donnelly East Park🌳

After the park underwent a restoration last year, there was now a big empty field just waiting for some greenery!🌱

Planting native trees and shrubs have many benefits, here are a few examples: shade helps cool the earth, habitat for our fuzzy and feathered friends (bugs too), air plants take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen for us to breathe🌬

Thank you to everyone who came out and endured the hard work and muddy conditions🥾
