‘ “Despite public perception, the Federal Emergency Management Agency does not provide monetary support to businesses; it assists with only personal and residential losses. When it comes to getting a company back on its feet, small business owners are left to lean on their communities, local government, and themselves. “In disasters, small businesses are endangered species,” says Craig Fugate, FEMA’s administrator from 2009 to 2017, “and they often have fail rates.” One dire statistic from the SBA states 90% of businesses hit by a natural disaster, don’t survive.’

A big shoutout to Liz for wanting to tell not only my story but those of other small business owners from varying natural disasters over the years. While the statistics are sobering and there has been a change of heart in the commitment to aid small businesses here locally, I have seen the best of our community (both near and far) and have continued to be blessed by others via our local churches and area chambers and most recently by Hearts on Main Street out of Atlanta. And while I am still less than halfway there, I am still counting my blessings for all that He is done in my life. For the people He has brought into it and for the organizations that see the value in small business and are working actively to secure and provide relief and resources. Because at the end of the day, small businesses are the cornerstones of our community - these small business owners are our friends & neighbors and they are the ones who show up to help out and support not only each other but our schools, kids, and community. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the small business community - it is an elite group of people with so much grit, heart, and resilience and I have learned so much from each one of you and been blessed by both the victories and valleys we have experienced.
