Our world today is filled with violence. But we have the power to reshape ourselves and the world around us. So today I offer some #practicalandtactical info from @guantesolo on building new worlds that are inextricably tied to consent culture. Consent is about more than what happens between intimate partners; it’s about how we interact everyday as community members. . I want a world where we respect each other’s yeses and no’s, where we don’t guilt or bully or coerce people, where we act with intention so people pleasers can say no and uphold their boundaries, where we take the time to listen, where we ask before sharing someone’s story or image, where we respect the agency of children, disabled folks and others who are often infantilized, where we take action to repair and heal when we get it wrong (as we inevitably will). . As a follow up o strongly recommended “Ask: Building Consent Culture” edited by Kitty Stryker which is the most expansive and interesting book I’ve ever read on consent culture. For those impacted by SV/DV in movement spaces, I recommend “The Revolution Starts at Home” which isn’t referenced here but if nonetheless relevant for many of us engaged in liberatory movement work. Our Constitution begins with three words: We the People. They remind us that power belongs to the people and that no president, federal agency, or political party stands above the Constitution.⁠ ⁠ For months, Minnesotans acted on that promise. They marched peacefully through subzero temperatures, carried whistles, documented federal agents’ public conduct, and looked out for their neighbors. Tens of thousands trained as constitutional observers.⁠ ⁠ As Emilia González Avalos said, "it was free people being free."⁠ ⁠ The Trump administration’s allegations against 15 specific people do not define the tens of thousands who acted peacefully and exercised their constitutional rights. Those allegations must be tested in court through due process, and not used to rewrite what Minnesotans witnessed or shift responsibility for the violence federal immigration agents brought into our communities.⁠ ⁠ We are clear: Constitutional observation and Democracy Defense are peaceful and nonviolent. We will continue observing, organizing, contacting our representatives, voting, protecting our elections, and ensuring that lawful results are honored and those duly elected are seated without political obstruction or delay.⁠ ⁠ Our protection is our power. Unfortunately, we've made the difficult decision to cancel tomorrow's Minnesota Zero Waste Fest due to the forecast of unhealthy air quality. As wildfires and extreme heat become a more common part of our summers, it's a reminder that climate change is affecting our communities in real time. We are particularly thinking of our friends in northern Minnesota. Reducing waste is one of the many ways we can cut climate pollution and build a healthier, more resilient future. We'll be sharing ways to take action on zero waste tomorrow, so check back here to learn how you can get involved. Mi gente 🤍 I’ve been sitting with this post for days. Like many of you, I’ve been following the news about Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Black young man who should have been getting ready for another year of college instead of becoming another family demanding truth, transparency, and accountability. I moved to the United States in 2005. During the eighteen years I lived there, I had the privilege of teaching countless Black boys, learning from extraordinary Black women leaders, and creating community with Black colleagues, caregivers, and families who forever changed the way I understand education. When I look at Nolan’s face, I see the faces of so many of my former students. I see my friends’ sons. I see the children whose mothers trusted me with what mattered most to them. Those conversations taught me something I could never have learned from a book: what it means to raise a Black boy in a society where racism continues to shape everyday life. Today, more than grief, I feel a deep sense of justified rage alongside the Black communities carrying this pain once again. Black boys deserve to grow up. They deserve safety. They deserve to come home and thrive their brilliance. This carousel isn’t about one tragedy. It’s about the educational responsibility we all share if we truly want these tragedies to become less common. That work doesn’t begin when a headline appears. It begins in our homes, our classrooms, and our communities, long before another family is left searching for answers. I hope Nolan’s family receives the truth, transparency, and justice they deserve. Rest in power, Nolan.
