@ginabinalmt is a high performing massage therapist @guidedmovementli (also my therapist) and colleague who thrives on movement, whether she’s treating clients’ needs for hours at a time, playing beach volleyball, surfing, rock climbing, or playing pickleball.

Her hip and thoracic mobility are impressive, but our recent work together has focused on managing a low-grade right shoulder injury. It’s a great example of a @functionalmvmt principle I return to often:

Proximal stability for distal mobility.

For the shoulder to move efficiently, the scapula needs to provide a stable, adaptable foundation for the glenohumeral joint.

In this movement prep sequence, we use closed-chain (sort of, with the stick and kb serving as a forceful end point) and controlled movements, including the arm bar and @stickmobility bow and arrow, with intentional time under tension.

The goal is to reinforce scapular control, improve neuromuscular coordination, and create an anchor from which the shoulder can move across multiple degrees of freedom while halting unwanted movement.

This is where scapulohumeral rhythm matters. The scapula and humerus need to coordinate and move interdependently.
Whether Gina is serving or spiking, paddling into a wave, reaching for the next hold, swinging a paddle, or simply training pain-free, shoulder performance starts with the right foundation.

Stabilize what needs stability. Mobilize what needs mobility. Then integrate both into the task.

Ensure your movement prep is efficient, effective, and purposeful. And breathe, remember to breathe 😮‍💨
