For AOKI’s seasonal dessert packaging, I wanted the experience to feel quiet, tactile, and intentional — something people could not only see, but also feel through their hands. The Seasonal Choux series comes in four flavors: Strawberry Blush, Blueberry Breeze, Banana Cream, and Signature Set — each name infused with a soft, poetic touch that reflects AOKI’s gentle tone of voice. Inspired by AOKI’s philosophy of mindful living and “the art of noticing,” I designed a minimal packaging system using textured recycled cardboard to create a more natural and honest feeling. The embossed AOKI logo adds a subtle tactile experience, inviting people to slow down and interact with the packaging more thoughtfully. Combined with generous white space and subtle illustrations inspired by the natural ingredients, the system reflects the calm simplicity and warmth that define AOKI. Rather than overwhelming the experience with excessive elements, the design allows space to breathe — letting the textures, materials, and small details quietly speak for themselves. AOKI was designed to translate the art of noticing into a visual experience — inviting people to slow down and let their senses fully awaken through warmth, taste, texture, and the nature surrounding them. Through every touchpoint — from the menu book, packaging, signage, to the shop exterior — the concept of mindful living is carried through soft compositions, thoughtful details, and a serene green palette that reflects calmness, warmth, and mindfulness. The visual direction was inspired by the philosophy of emptiness by Kenya Hara and Sato’s idea of “Just Enough Design.” In his book, Sato describes design simply as “connecting people and things” — a perspective that deeply shaped the way I approached AOKI. Empty space became an essential part of the experience, allowing the identity to breathe rather than overwhelm. This softer rhythm invites people to pause, notice, and feel each moment more intentionally. At the same time, I didn’t want AOKI to feel entirely minimal. To bring warmth and humanity into the brand, I infused subtle illustrations inspired by AOKI’s natural ingredients — freshly sourced from local neighborhood farmers. These small visual elements help balance simplicity with softness, making the brand feel calm, honest, and quietly alive. This month, I joined the Branding Challenge by @guidepax and @adiawarja with the theme of a Japanese-inspired pastry shop called AOKI. My answer to the challenge was to create more than just a pastry brand — I wanted AOKI to become a gentle reminder to pause and reconnect with the small moments we often overlook. Inspired by Japanese simplicity, softness, and craftsmanship, the brand embraces a calm and mindful atmosphere through its warm visual language and serene green color palette, reflecting a sense of quiet comfort and mindfulness. From the warm, flaky layers of a freshly baked croissant, the fresh delight of taking the first bite of a sandwich, the softness of a quiet morning, the mindful craft of the pâtissier, to the gentle tear of freshly baked bread — every detail was designed to slow people down and invite them to truly feel the moment.
