Being here at the @nfaflute Convention has reminded me of my experience serving on the semi-final and final round juries of the NFA Young Artist Competition last year. It has also brought back memories of just a few weeks ago, when I had the pleasure of adjudicating the annual Flute Prize at the @guildhallschool of Music and Drama, organised by the wonderful @guildhall_flutes and kindly sponsored by @justfluteslondon.

Adjudicating on occasions like these is always an immensely rewarding experience. The sheer amount of work, dedication and perseverance behind every single performance is almost tangible and inspiring. At Guildhall, we heard three distinctive artistic voices—three musicians with very different personalities and musical identities. Their programmes embraced a remarkably wide spectrum of repertoire, including contemporary works, music by underrepresented composers and even an original composition. @rachelhowie28, @bellebrunson and @danielpengellymusic each performed with conviction, imagination and genuine artistic generosity.

For me, the evening became a celebration not only of flute playing, but of courage and dedication. Ours is a profession in which we repeatedly step onto the stage, offering everything we have learned, and ultimately, something deeply personal about ourselves. We do so knowing that we will be evaluated, compared and often leave without being the one person selected. It is a profession that demands both artistic excellence and remarkable resilience.

Therefore one of the most moving aspects of the evening was the atmosphere of genuine support. The encouragement of the three finalists showed one another, together with the warmth of the audience and the presence of the Guildhall flute professors—Philippa Davies, Sarah Newbold and Ian Clarke.

Congratulations once again to the winner, Daniel Pengelly, whose programme stood out for its extraordinary breadth—from core repertoire such as the Liebermann Sonata to the premiere of his own compositions, as well as some truly impressive beatboxing, all performed entirely from memory!
I would also like to congratulate the two other outstanding finalists, Rachel Howie and Belle Brunson!

And just like that, yesterday I played my last recital as a student meaning I have officially expired and finished two years of Orchestral Artistry Masters at Guildhall co-run with the London Symphony Orchestra.
It may be that I am a master of the flute now!!!!! 🤓

Come to @guildhallschool on 16 June, where at 18:15 in the Lecture Recital Room (LRR), the three finalists of the IV Guildhall Flute Prize will present their programmes! Rachel Howie @rachelhowie28, Belle Brunson @bellebrunson, and Daniel Pengelly @danielpengellymusic have each assembled a varied and imaginative programme that promises to be both captivating and entertaining. I am very much looking forward to hearing them myself - it is always a pleasure to listen to outstanding young flautists, whose energy, curiosity and enthusiasm are truly contagious.

I will also have the privilege of serving as a judge for the competition, providing feedback at the end of the evening and announcing this year’s Flute Prize winner. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly. Comparing three highly individual musicians and programmes is never easy. Ours is a profession in which we continually place ourselves in vulnerable situations, investing time, effort and heart into our work, knowing that we may or may not receive the prize, position, invitation or opportunity we hope for - this is one of the hardest things about living the life of a performing artist.

My aim, therefore, is to create an atmosphere in which each performer can enjoy the opportunity to share their artistry and individuality. I hope that each flutist will leave feeling proud of what they have achieved, inspired by one another’s playing, and motivated for the next chapter of their musical lives. The commitment and artistry required to stand on that stage at the final round are achievements worthy of recognition in themselves.

One performer will ultimately be awarded the Flute Prize, and that achievement deserves to be celebrated. Recognition matters, and winning can be an important encouragement at a significant moment in a young artist’s journey. Yet one of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that a musician’s growth is rarely defined by a single competition result. Artistic development unfolds over a lifetime, shaped by performances, lessons, successes, disappointments and discoveries.

Let’s root for everyone together and thank you to @guildhall_flutes for organising and @justfluteslondon 🙏🏽

Thank you March for being the most tiring, intense, new, beautiful and exciting month! Phew!
From a lovely concert with the Oxford Philharmonic, through many performances of Vermont Counterpoint and one of them being a suport act for my favourite rockstar @flutelicious with the one and only LSO, then playing a few notes at the Royal Opera House, taking part in an amazing LSO Next Generation project, and playing one of my Master’s final recitals… my heart is full, my brain is so tired! Thank you to everyone and everything who has made it happen! 🔮🪬✨🧚🏼couldn’t be more grateful after this month 🏄🏼‍♀️

Last week, I had the honour of playing the flute as well as assisting with the coordination of the @guildhall_flutes Barbican Foyer performance, which was an official pre-concert event for @flutelicious and @londonsymphonyorchestra ⭐️

Thank you to my former flute Professor, Gareth Davies, for bringing me on board for the project, and to the LSO Teams for being so welcoming and supportive. It was a true career dream that happened in real life for me ❤️

It was also very special to perform the European premiere of @garethmclearnon 's new flute choir piece "Seconds on State Street" with 13 flute friends! 🎼

Finally, thank you to the amazing Guildhall Flutes for being simply the best departament ever!!! 🪈
