POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It’s been a journey since our first creative partnership with @meca_houston in 2021. Check out these pics of when we were slowly adjusting to a new normal post pandemic to now … our collaborations gave me an opportunity to connect with @lualo.studio and @uniprotexas and have built beautiful friendships ever since! So grateful for these opportunities to share our work to the Houston community!

Looking back at these photos & videos brings joyful memories! Malaya has stepped into leadership, classroom management, syllabus development, and the confidence to lead from this place! And I stepped into my own roles as a bearer of culture and a storyteller of our pre colonial histories often untold.

This Father’s Day, I reflect on how my dad would have been proud of me and his apo (grandchild) for being vessels for education through the arts! He would have been proud witnessing @malaya_ulan articulate our cultural values and histories with confidence and eloquence. I miss you daddy but I know you’re enjoying what we’re doing:)

We will miss this summer camp! Til next time!

What a beautiful way to celebrate Alice Valdez’s birthday month! 💛

This month, we joined artists, community leaders, and supporters at @houincolor’s inaugural Culture Bearer Awards Luncheon to celebrate MECA founder Alice Valdez and Dr. Alvia Wardlaw, recipients of the inaugural Culture Bearer Awards.

For more than 40 years, Alice has dedicated her life to ensuring arts and cultural opportunities remain accessible to Houston’s families, artists, and young people.

We are deeply grateful to Houston in Color, Executive Director Sixto Wagan, and the entire team for recognizing her extraordinary legacy and lifelong commitment to community through the arts.

The afternoon was made even more special with performances by @riyaazqawwali, a call to the ancestors led by Sister Mama Sonya, and a beautiful closing performance by the @segundobarriocc.

Congratulations, Alice, on this well-deserved honor. Your impact continues to inspire generations of Houstonians.

My first summer after high school was spent teaching at MECA — a nonprofit dedicated to multicultural education and counseling through the arts. I’m so thankful for this opportunity and all that I learned along the way!💛

The Houston Arts Venue Registry makes the search for your next venue simple, featuring various unique art spaces all over the Greater Houston Area.

This week we’re shining the spotlight on MECA located in Arts District Houston.

“For nearly five decades, this nonprofit arts organization has become a vital cultural treasure for underserved and underrepresented communities in Houston, Texas. MECA enriches its community through creativity and the transformative power of the arts. Grounded in four core pillars-arts education, social support services, academic support services, and a performing and visual arts series-it offers a dynamic platform for emerging and established artists while providing holistic support for individuals and families." - Armando Silva, Executive Director.
