POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The hardest part of creating something isn’t having the idea. It’s getting it out of your head and into the world.

Most people won’t see what you see. Some won’t understand it until it’s finished. Some won’t understand it even then. That’s okay.

I’ve learned that you have to trust your own vision, but also be willing to put it in the hands of talented people who can make it better. That’s the magic of making comics, books, and art with a team.

And sometimes you’ll miss. Sometimes you’ll spend years on something that doesn’t land. But I’d rather fail chasing something I believe in than succeed making something I don’t.

Don’t confuse applause with progress. Don’t chase the herd because it’s easier.

Make cool shit. Work with good people. Stay weird. Play the long game.

And read more books.

P.S. Check out AEON featured in this post. Some pretty incredible art worth your attention.

Happy Short Friday!

We’ve spent thousands of years staring out at the ocean, wondering what’s hiding beneath it.

But what if we’ve been asking the wrong question?

This week’s story is WATERS, a little cosmic horror about the Bermuda Triangle, the things we can’t explain, and why some mysteries are better left alone.

A complete sci-fi story in under 5 minutes. Written by yours truly.

Swipe through, enjoy the nightmare, and let me know what you think of that ending.

Short stories. Long weekends. Strange fiction for all.

New stories every Friday at @shortfridays.

It takes a village. And sometimes a small army.

One of the things I’ve learned over the years making comics, books, films, and all sorts of creative insanity is that no matter how big the idea is, you can’t do it alone.

I might be the guy out front talking about these worlds, but behind every page, every panel, every character, and every crazy idea that somehow becomes real, there’s a team of wildly talented people making it happen.

Writers, artists, colorists, letterers, editors, designers, producers, and a whole bunch of people who rarely get the spotlight they deserve.

And that’s the magic of it all. Taking something that started in someone’s head and building it together until it becomes something none of us could have made alone.

So here’s some love for the people behind the pages. The ones who make the impossible look easy.

I couldn’t do any of this without my army.

Who’s in yours?

Everyone has an idea. Some are brilliant. Some are insane. Some probably should never see the light of day.

But an idea is only the beginning.

I’ve spent my career building worlds, writing stories, and working with artists, writers, and creators who can take something that exists only in someone’s imagination and turn it into something real.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that execution is everything.

The right team doesn’t just bring your vision to life. They challenge it, push it, break it apart, and help build something better than you could have imagined alone.

That’s the magic of making comics. A hundred different creative decisions, made by people who give a damn, coming together to tell one story.

So find your people. Build your worlds. Make some weird shit.

Because the world doesn’t need another great idea sitting in someone’s notebook.

It needs more great stories brought to life.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Ever look at a page in a graphic novel and wonder how the hell it all came together?

Here’s the thing about comics: the writer might put the words on the page, but the artist brings an entirely new language to the story.

And that’s where the magic happens.

A great graphic novel isn’t just a script with pictures. It’s a conversation between two creative minds, constantly pushing each other to make something better than either could have made alone.

Sometimes the artist sees something the writer never imagined. Sometimes a single panel says more than three pages of dialogue ever could.

That’s what I love about this medium. It’s collaborative storytelling at its absolute best.

Swipe through for a little look at that process, some ridiculously good art, and a well-deserved shoutout to one of the best to do it.

Also, apparently we’re talking about plaid now.

Question for my comic people: What graphic novel has artwork that absolutely blew you away?

FREE PEOPLE is our first original short story. A little science fiction. A little revolution. And one very expensive definition of liberty.

Welcome to SHORT FRIDAYS.

Short stories. Long weekends. Strange fiction for all.

Every Friday, a new journey into the strange, the impossible, and the occasionally catastrophic.

Swipe to read. Stay for the next transmission.

And tell us: Would you sacrifice your world to save its freedom?

One of my favorite things about making graphic novels is how many people it takes to bring a story to life.

It starts with an idea, sometimes a pretty ridiculous one, and then you get a group of talented people in a room who all see something a little different in it.

Writers, artists, colorists, letterers, designers, editors. Everyone brings their own perspective, their own taste, and their own little bit of madness.

And somewhere along the way, the story becomes something bigger than any one of us could have made alone.

That’s what I love about comics. It’s an art form built on collaboration. You have to trust people, challenge each other, disagree sometimes, and ultimately remember that everyone is trying to make the best damn book possible.

There’s nothing quite like seeing those first rough sketches turn into finished pages, and eventually holding the book in your hands.

Making art is hard. Making it together is what makes it fun.
More of that, always.

what an insane week at @newyorkcomiccon- new friends, old faces and fun times. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the creatives and firepower that wanders these rooms, comics are alive and well, and we are all better for it.
