SoS advisory board member and composer @gunngary recently scored the retelling of the Judy Blume classic teen novel “Forever” (@foreveronnetflix) as a @netflix series directed by @Marabrockakil. The show takes the emotional core of the book and implants it into a modern context - centering on the rich and complex emotional lives of young Black characters in LA and their experience of first love and coming of age in an era of uncertainty and digital overreach into our personal lives. Lead actor Michael Cooper has said that “what I hope audiences take away is that love can teach you who you are — but it can’t always carry you into who you’re becoming.”

Gary’s goal in music for the show was to “reflect the fullest scope of their humanity” — through melodic phrases, lush layers, and abstract textures that allow the story to breathe and resonate.

He shared:

“Mara Brock Akil’s reimagining of Judy Blume’s ‘Forever’ represents a rare moment in American storytelling — a series that offers an authentic and expansive portrayal of late adolescent love through the lens of Black characters. My intention was to capture and convey the complex and evolving inner worlds of these characters without the constraints of genre or expectation — to reflect the fullest scope of their humanity. These dynamic emotional landscapes inspired a rich palette of melodic phrases, lush layers, and, at times, abstract textures— elements I was fortunate to explore and encouraged to pursue in my collaboration with Mara. I hold sincere gratitude for this opportunity and this offering.”

As more people turn toward ambient scores, minimalist compositions, and classical sounds, we’re reminded that music like this can be more than a backdrop — it can be a tool for emotional connection, meditation and potentially self-understanding.

Stream the show. Or just the score. Read the novel. Either way, you’ll be happy you did.
