‘SISTERHOOD’ This body of work translates ghostly archival photographs into molasses paintings on cotton. The original colonial images, which are grainy, impersonal, and devoid of names, remain etched in digital memory. I recreate them by layering molasses stains that bleed and pool, denying precise form. The figures become spectral presences, anonymous yet emotionally resonant. This distortion critiques the colonial lens and insists on ambiguity where forced clarity once reigned. The act of staining serves both as remembrance and resistance, suggesting a refusal to reproduce colonial violence through aesthetics. These haunting portraits occupy the tension between being seen and being understood, where the molasses both obscures and reveals complex legacies. On the next page is a three-part series translating photographs of indentured women on plantations who remain unnamed. A bright and lasting shade of green was a precious and rare find throughout much of art history. So much of our natural world is made up of hues like emerald, lime, chartreuse, mint, and moss. Whether it was made by crushing minerals like malachite, or by mixing washes of blue and yellow paint, generations of artists have depicted the world around them with a colour that wasn’t always as abundant in their creative materials as it was in the environments surrounding them. What does green mean to you? Let us know in the comments below. Images: 1. Thebe Phetogo (@thebephetogo) in Guns & Rain’s booth in 2022. 2. Ulriche Jantjes (@fieldandstudio_) in 99 Loop Gallery’s booth in 2026. 3. ‘FINDING MY SELF’ Using sugar glass, I layered family photographs to destabilize fixed modes of looking. Sugar glass evokes sweetness and fragility—desirability and disruption. Through layered collages, I challenge binaries of inside/outside and emphasize the need to look in-between. Images of figures have been made into silhouettes to grant dignity to those depicted and withheld from public consent. Patricia Hayes’ (2020) exploration of the “Other lives of the image” influences my view of photographs as mutable and continually accumulating meaning with each re-viewing. By embedding the images in sugar glass, I render them visually unstable—fluid, fractured, and open to reinterpretation. The altered opacity and temporal fragility invite a return to the once colonized subject as an active site of meaning-making, rather than a static object of the colonial gaze. The Photographic Collective is proud to present the work of Zenaéca Singh 💛 ‘A Bittersweet Her-story’ (2024) features a series of six molasses-stained prints of colonial images of South African Indian women portrayed in roles shaped by colonial administration of indentureship and governance in South Africa. These molasses-stained photographs address the difficult question of what to do with the violent legacy of colonial archives. As an inheritor of these images, I grapple with how to engage them meaningfully without reinforcing violences of the image. Drawing on Weingarten and Bellamy’s (2020) concept of Inheritance, the images are stained with molasses that slowly drips off, revealing underlying details through viewer interaction. This slow revelation emphasizes a participatory reanimation of the archival image and offers agency to ancestors and their descendants in reshaping how their histories are re-presented. The process of obscuring beckons the viewer to look as an act of care. Words by Zenaéca Singh About the artist Zenaéca Singh (b. 2000)’s work explores the complex history of the sugar economy in South Africa and its entanglement with migration, colonialism, labour exploitation, and the dynamics of the domestic sphere. Working across painting, sculpture and installation, she investigates archives of images and text related to indentured South African Indians in the period 1860–1911. Her current works draw primarily on family and archival photographs, transforming them into alluring paintings and assemblages made from sugar in different states of crystallisation. Singh holds an MFA with distinction from the University of Cape Town and is pursuing a PhD in Art History at UCT. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and her museum commissions include 25 days for Fenix Museum of Migration and Along the South Coast for the Rietberg Museum. In 2026, she joined Sharjah Art Foundation’s Artist Residency Programme. Discover her work on The Photographic Collective website (link in bio). Guns & Rain is a Johannesburg-based gallery for contemporary African art, with a local and international programme of exhibitions and collaborations. Founded in 2014 as one of Africa’s first online galleries, Guns & Rain was established to address the global under-representation of African art. The gallery has worked with over 80 artists from 11 African countries, and is known both for their leaning towards social and political themes, and for identifying new talent.  Since 2014, Guns & Rain has presented over 100 exhibitions and fairs in over a dozen countries, and has helped launch several artists into international careers. The name ‘Guns & Rain’ comes from the work of South African-born British anthropologist and playwright David Lan, who wrote about guerrillas and spirit mediums in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.
