2016 was an amazing year for me - DJing, doing makeup and hair on set, teaching at @cmucollege, working with Basia Bulat & I opened my little place on College. The more time passes and as Homer becomes more independent the more I consider reopening a small little HOME again.
I love this 2016 throwback thing because in my mind I’m still the same, but in reality life is soooo different now!
Love these memories and look forward to more happy times ahead!
And yes - that’s me! I was a drag queen/DJ/party girl before I was a largely sweatshirt & sneaker wearing single mom!

Last night, my boyband performed at the Cinematek in Brussels in a programme about transformation curated by my dear and brilliant colleague Anouk De Clerq. My 2002 video I AM A BOYBAND, in which I sing all four parts of a pop version of an Elizabethan madrigal, was presented alongside images by Cindy Sherman, the first contemporary artist I ever admired. Sherman’s early Untitled Film Stills touched a very deep place within me when I first saw them in art school, prompting my first professionally-exhibited artworks: a series of self-portraits in her style, created in 1999 with Aleesa Cohene and Nina Arsenault. It was this initial artistic gesture that eventually led to my early performance-based video work, including the boyband, so it was such a thrill and honour to share projection space with Sherman in Anouk’s programme. I could not be in Brussels for the screening, but was glad to hear that my boyband still prompted delight from the audience, even 22 years later. The programme also included work by Manon de Boer, Maria Lassnig, Sebastian Buerkner, Robert Seidel, and Floor Toppets. Full video link in bio!

The QSO began as an experiment in 2014 to see if there was space in the world for a project that aimed to offer thoughtful reflections on queer experience, set to a live soundtrack of the songs that had shaped them. Ten years on we have worked with hundreds of collaborators and performed for thousands of people, from Whitehorse YK to St. John’s, NFLD. It’s amazing to reflect today on these experiences and to consider the ripple effects that this little seed of an idea has had over the past decade. Much love to our community, everyone who has touched or been touched by the QSO over this time, it’s been a beautiful experience and we’re truly grateful to you all.

xoxo, QSO
