We talk to one of this year’s 𝐀𝐀𝐅 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 recipients, dance artist @xin_with_ji, who used this time to learn from practitioners across other art forms. This has led to his collaboration with painter @guotentag and the development of 𝑆𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐷𝑟𝑎𝑔, an excerpt of which was presented at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in June earlier this year. Without the Fellowship, he says, “I don’t think I would ever have been brave enough to think about challenging the form.”

I first came across Tony Guo’s work through this year’s Springboard Awards. After meeting Tony and seeing his larger-than-life paintings in person, I wanted to look a little closer. The more I dived into his practice, the more intrigued I became by how he explores dislocation—geographical, cultural and personal—through paintings where whimsy and existential unease coexist.

And then I noticed the books.

Tony is an avid reader, so naturally, I wanted to know what was sitting on his bookshelf. For our latest series of The Artist’s Bookshelf, Tony shares four books that have caught his attention, stayed with him, or perhaps offered another way of looking at the world.

Born in Aotearoa in 1999 and raised in Northeast China, Tony returned to New Zealand on his own at twelve. Now based in Tāmaki Makaurau, he predominantly works in oil, drawing together art history, personal identity and fantasy to create paintings that feel both playful and deeply complex.

The Adam Portraiture Awards opening night last Friday.

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and traffic to come and join us at this event, it was so wonderful to be joined by Brian Wood, Director of the New Zealand Portrait Gallery for this opening, and to see how long people spent with the works, lingering over some pieces, having in-depth discussions about others.

This exhibition will be in our Whakaari gallery space until Monday 9 November, so make sure you pop in to enjoy it next time you're in Remarkables Park. 📸: @oakleybloke

Spied the brilliant @matt.hurley at work. @lelajacobs extra pair of hands. Marvelling at moving light with @bruceconnew. Bumping into familiar faces, old and new. A long lost feeling to be out, without a camera but seeing photos anyway. Gorgeous light, creativity, community. Cant wait to see the book so can spend more time with the thoughtful, awe inspiring pieces.

Tony Guo’s Queue is now closed! It has been a pleasure welcoming visitors to the show. Next up, we have Raukura Turei’s He Karanga Karamea, which opens at 11am on Thursday 20 August. The celebration is the following week, taking place from 4 to 6pm on Saturday 29 August.
