Who Are You, and What Are You Doing Here?

A stranger asked me this on a bus recently. He had spent the entire ride inquiring about a Mr. Ben Cheves, who, to my knowledge, did not exist. Only after following me to my next stop did he accept that he would not get the answers he desired. His subsequent inquiry; however, took me by surprise: Who are you, and what are you doing here?

Well, I thought, tonight I am heading to Bushwick to perform in a provocative play from the 19th century—though the production is in limbo as a fog machine took out an actor—and earlier, I recalled, I taught ‘Shark Tank-Kids’ at my teaching-artist day job.

I never thought a career in the arts would be straightforward, but I realized I may have lost the plot. Thankfully, I didn’t have to admit this to my new companion as he got bored and ran off into Empire Boulevard. As I awaited my next bus, I wondered how my other creative friends are getting by—how they would respond to this strange man. So, I started pushing this prompt to others, and wrote a short series from the responses. This is episode one of, Who Are You, What Are You Doing Here? Featuring my dear friend Reid, who is a competitive swim coach, beloved candy store employee, fervent people pleaser, and an actor. Also featuring @wolfgangprichett as himself, @alliewrubel as pompous New Yorker, @gus_glick as I-Pad Thief, @noagkinh as acting prodigy, @spncrtrnr as wise acting teacher, @elisemariemcfarland @alechoxha @langs_ward @good_norming as other students @riley.halpern as girl who booked a Dove commercial and Reid’s neighbors as party guests.
