ART COLOGNE Profile — The Shelf as a Dialogue Partner. A shelf holds things. Otto Zapf’s Softline can do something else: it can be taken apart, moved, reassembled. Wooden frames and lacquered foil joined by zips and press studs. Designed in 1969 for spaces that would change with their inhabitants. For Harry Schellenberg, founder of GUSCH, it is something else again — an ideal dialogue partner for contemporary art. At his gallery, a chair, sofa or shelf receives the attention usually reserved for a sculpture. How is it constructed? How does it affect the body? What ideas of proximity, movement or social interaction are embedded in its form? This summer, GUSCH opened its new Cologne space with Limbo — Zapf’s Softline Shelving System in dialogue with works by Rosemarie Trockel. Not a curatorial surprise, as it turns out: Trockel had already incorporated Zapf’s shelving into her 2005 work Ageism. For the Cologne exhibition she developed Arm Length (2026), a new work that continued the exchange. Zapf and Trockel share an analytical interest in how objects are tailored to bodies — and the expectations this entails. At ART COLOGNE, GUSCH exhibits in the ART + OBJECT section. The perfect match for a gallery that has spent years asking how much an object can tell us once it leaves its accustomed place. A week in our Antwerp apartment and a little look at our day-to-day interiors. Working from the living room, spending way too much time on our very comfy carpet, rearranging objects, organizing books and magazines, and making space for a few new arrivals. Our friends Lisa & Harry with doggo Willi visiting over the weekend, things constantly moving around, and a few simple impressions of how we’ve been living with the Golem pieces lately. All featured pieces are available for sale… Inquiries via DM or Website - link in bio. #AntwerpInteriors #CollectibleDesign #designobjects #interiorstyling #collectorspiece

Zig Zag Chair by Gerrit T. Rietveld, 1934. Produced by Cassina since 1973. One of the most radical expressions of Gerrit T. Rietveld’s experimental approach to furniture, the Zig Zag Chair emerged during a period in which Rietveld was developing furniture for the Amsterdam department store Metz & Co. Reducing the conventional sequence of legs, seat and backrest to four flat planes of wood arranged in a continuous Z-shaped form, the chair appears almost structurally impossible, balancing visual instability with remarkably precise construction. One of the earliest examples of a cantilevered chair in solid wood, Zig Zag relies on carefully executed dovetail joints to connect its horizontal and vertical planes. Today, Cassina produces the chair in solid American cherry and ash, with the craftsmanship of its carpenters playing an essential role in preserving the clarity of Rietveld’s original structure. Produced by Cassina since 1973 as part of the Cassina iMaestri Collection, Zig Zag remains one of Rietveld’s most recognizable experiments in structure, geometry and reduction of form.
