It's official! We launched our nonprofit website today! ✨Check out tribecollective.org.✨This idea sparked our Freshman year at Spelman. It is truly a testimony to God's faithfulness and the importance of pushing this vision forward. Our film, “Stop Sign” has officially been selected to screen at the 2018 Los Angeles Movie Awards ‪on January 18th‬ at the Complex Theater. We have also won the “Honorable Mention” award. The screening would be followed by an award presentation and a Q&A session. Seating is limited, if you’re interested in joining and supporting our film, tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased via link in @stopsignthemovie bio. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Stop Sign is a compelling story to raise awareness for spousal rape. It portrays the story from the perspective of both the victim and the abuser, to bring insight to the silence behind this injustice. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In regards to spousal rape, people would often ask, “What is spousal rape?” “Why would a woman be raped by her spouse?” To answer the first question, spousal rape can be defined as any unwanted sexual acts by a spouse or ex-spouse, committed without consent and/or against a person's will, obtained by force, threat of force, intimidation, or when a person is unable to consent. Secondly, rape isn’t always the result of the woman withholding sex, but as an assertion of power and control through sex. Two days before we started shooting the film, I remember waking in what felt like a panic attack, wondering to myself; “Why are we making a film about rape?” Shortly afterwards, I somehow went right back to sleep and had a dream in which a man said, “Don’t play it safe, there's no power in playing it safe." My prayer and vision for this film is to speak about spousal rape, keeping in mind that it would engage a conversation about rape when the abuser is someone close to the victim. To portray rape not just as an abuse, but a betrayal. According to statistics, between 65% and 85% of rapes are perpetrated by someone the victim knows. Knowing the perpetrator first as a friend, a father, a husband, etc. So we made a film where you'll get to know and to your judgement could like the person that ultimately ends up being the perpetrator. You meet a person that believes he loves his wife, causing his actions of assault and betrayal to stir up confusion in the victim. Which brings about the question; 'Could this be a contributing factor to the low percentage of rapes being reported?' The film invites the audience to participate in a conversation from different angles. If the perpetrator is someone that "cares" for the victim, does he see himself as a rapist or is there a flaw in his understanding of sex, love and/or marriage? Does the victim choose silence to protect the image of the relationship? We decided to tell the story in a way that broadens the perspective of the audience on rape, because when we can see the story from the victim and the perpetrators view point, we can have a conversation that brings us a step closer to breaking the silence and ending the abuse. #StopSign #ComingSoon @stopsignthemovie
