“THE MORE SUCCESSFUL YOU ARE, THE MORE YOU OWE”

Many Silicon Valley companies began with idealistic dreams of making the world better, only to end up focused on making more money.

Guy Kawasaki believes success comes with a responsibility: the more you achieve, the more you owe to society.

The full conversation is out now on 22nd Century Frontier, hosted by Petar Dimov.

Guy Kawasaki read Carol Dweck’s book Mindset and says it fundamentally changed his life. Proof: he took up hockey at 44, coming from Hawaii, where there’s no pond hockey. Then he took up surfing at 60. (Yes, someone from Hawaii waited until 60 to surf. That’s a story for another day.)

His point: a growth mindset means you don’t assume you’re limited. Hockey, surfing, winemaking, photography, crochet. You can learn new skills and become new things.

But belief alone won’t get you there. Without grit, the growth mindset is just a nice idea, because nothing new and difficult is ever going to be easy.

Believe you can, then do the hard part anyway.

“NEVER ASK PEOPLE TO DO WHAT YOU WOULDN’T”

Technology will change.

Business will evolve.

But one principle of leadership will remain true:

Never ask people to do something you wouldn't be willing to do yourself.

Guy Kawasaki shares a timeless lesson for leaders, founders, and anyone responsible for a team.

Episode 11 is now out and it's all about how I self-published my book Cowboy Dad and my process as a writer! This episode is all about self-publishing but also when, where, and how I wrote my book! I also have a surprise announcement at the end of the episode!

This photo was taken in 2013. This is Guy Kawasaki @remar @guykawasaki and he is someone I have looked up to for years. I recognized him at a rodeo in Santa Barbara! I tell the story in this episode-- it's funny and quite ironic and who doesn't love irony?!

In reading this, your response is probably much like my friends at the rodeo when I exclaimed, "Oh my God there's Guy Kawasaki! " They said, "Who's Guy Kawasaki?!

Guy Kawasaki is a marketing expert, an author (NYT Best selling author and has written more than 15 books) and perhaps best known for helping launch the Macintosh computer in 1984, working with Steve Jobs. He is currently the Chief Evangelist for Canva and he's the host of the podcast Remarkable People.

Is it possible that I have another surprise to announce... I'm going to wait a few days on that one...can you guess what it might be?

SILICON VALLEY IS PLAYING A DIFFERENT GAME

In Silicon Valley, failure can look like success when you rewrite the story afterwards.

“WE INVEST IN PEOPLE” IS A MYTH

The best startup idea might begin with two people building something they wish existed.

Guy Kawasaki argues that the real opportunity comes when founders create a product they genuinely want to use, then discover others want it too.

It’s a reminder that great businesses often start with a real problem, not just a pitch.

THE TWO BY TWO MATRIX THAT DEFINES GREAT PRODUCTS

A product can be unique and still fail. It can be valuable and still struggle to stand out. So where do you find the sweet spot?

The answer is a simple two-by-two matrix built around two questions: Is your product valuable, and is it unique?

There are four possible outcomes. A unique product that nobody values may be original, but originality alone is not enough. A product that is neither unique nor valuable has little to offer. And if your product delivers value but isn't unique, you may find yourself competing on price.

But there is one corner that changes everything: a product that is both unique and valuable.

That's where the opportunity lies to build something that stands apart, matters to customers, and has the potential to make history.

For founders and entrepreneurs, the distinction is crucial. Creating something different is not the same as creating something people need. The real challenge is bringing uniqueness and value together.

“Longevity takes work,” says Carol, 77.

And she has a wicked sense of humor.

Her plan for when she’s too old to get herself to her surf spot? Let’s just say it involves a hot guy and a boom truck. 😂
