Future Retrieval’s multidisciplinary practice reexamines the traditions of ceramics through a contemporary sculptural language, bringing together historical references, material experimentation, and an exploration of form.

In this stoneware sculpture, an intricate, richly textured surface envelops an open, architectural structure. The interplay of organic contours, layered color, and negative space creates a dynamic composition that emphasizes both the materiality of clay and the sculptural possibilities of the medium.

Something new is taking shape at Taliesin West.

Installation is nearly complete for "Originals," our newest exhibition, opening this Friday, October 16. Get a first look at this fresh exploration of decorative arts through the work of Artists-in-Residence Katie Parker @katieparker101 and Guy Michael Davis, @guymdavis who collaborate as Future Retrieval. Since 2008, they’ve drawn inspiration from mining archives and museums to digitally collect and make objects that reexamine the history of decorative arts.

Be among the first to experience it. "Originals" is included with your Self-Guided Audio Tour ticket at no additional cost and will be on view October 16, 2026, through January 31, 2027.

“Originals” at Taliesin West
October 16th–January 31st

“Originals” invites visitors to experience Taliesin West through the eyes of contemporary artists and discover what inspires them (about Taliesin West or the exhibition) to create something original in their own lives—whether a work of art, a new idea, a fresh perspective, or a meaningful change in how they live.

Every original begins with inspiration.

For artists Future Retrieval (Guy Michael Davis and Katie Parker), that inspiration was Taliesin West. After spending time immersed in Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert laboratory, they created a series of original works that respond to the architecture, landscape, history and spirit of the site.

Layering works across mediums can create unexpected conversations within a space.

Here, a painting by Lin Jingjing provides the backdrop for a sculpture by Future Retrieval, the collaborative practice of Katie Parker and Guy Michael Davis. Lin Jingjing’s constructed imagery and Future Retrieval’s richly tactile ceramic practice approach ideas of perception, history, and the contemporary world from distinctly different perspectives.

We often enjoy placing sculpture in dialogue with painting, allowing color, texture, scale, and form to overlap and giving each work a different presence than it might have on its own.

Founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Storer, @rookwoodpottery made history as the first large manufacturing enterprise founded and owned by a woman in the US. The company launched the art pottery movement in the US.

Rookwood ceramics are now highly collectible and its tile can be found in homes and commercial buildings throughout Cincinnati (and beyond!).

The @cincyartmuseum includes many Rookwood pieces in its collection, and this example was produced in 2013 by artists @katieparker101 and @guymdavis, working collaboratively as Future Retrieval, and @terencehammonds with Rookwood’s resident artists.

The tile mural above the mantel was inspired by a 15th century Indian tapestry. The original’s deer and cheetah have been replaced by architect Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome as well as dogs (including portraits of the artists’ pets), pigeons and rodents (critters affiliated with the historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood where Rookwood operates today).

The tiles below the mantel feature the artists’ ceramic heroes, including Rookwood founder Maria Longworth Nichols Storer, as well as influential figures like Eva Zeisel and Josiah Wedgwood.

The large bears seated on the hearth are enlarged, gilded copies of a bookend sculpture, titled Honey Bear, produced by Rookwood artist Louise Abel in 1934.

You can find this monumentally scaled contemporary work among the beloved early 20th century Rookwood murals, fireplace and fountain in CAM’s Procter & Gamble Gallery (G126).

Life looks different 9 years later but we are back in Sweden for a two month residency at @konstepidemin.se in Gothenburg. Our art now happens at night and we spend the day with the kids but it’s still pretty magical to be able to do this again with @guymdavis. Our first residency was in Stockholm in 2017 at @iaspis.se

So excited to finally share the US release of HOME FOR NOW - a passion project by our new friends and collaborators, @nikkoalos and @paulfirmin from @earlofeastlondon and published into real life by @gestalten This book is a printed celebration of the many ways people make their home in a rental from cities like London, and others around the world. Many thanks to @chevill and @chrisin323 for suggesting us to the wonderful folks from across the pond

Last October, they came to LA with photographer extraordinaire @sarahvictoriabates to shoot several homes including our apartment. The title of our feature “A Gallery in Residence’ takes a peek into where we live, work, play and dream

One of my all time favorite vessels from Vessel Cult (a collaboration with @guymdavis & @katieparker101 aka Future Retrieval) is on view @thelandinggallery in their 10 Year Anniversary exhibition through May 2nd in Los Angeles! The tiny handles, the nine-patch quilt but remixed with ancient Mediterranean zhuzh, and melted glaze magic - she’s a gem!
