‘Burnouts’ [1996–ongoing] painting/print series by Guy Overfelt @guyoverfelt

In his ongoing series Burnouts, Guy Overfelt transforms a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am into both performance instrument and printing press. Beginning in 1996, Overfelt executed burnouts
 - spinning the car’s rear tires - over Belgian linen and modified paper, creating monoprints marked by tire rubber, heat, and chance.

This process, often conducted in public spaces, critiques the American Dream and car culture, exploring themes of class, power, and masculinity. Overfelt’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Oakland Museum of California and the Havana Biennial.

In 1998, a burnout performance in front of a San Francisco gallery led to his arrest on misdemeanor charges [slide 13]. The legal proceedings became part of the artwork [slide 14], featuring courtroom sketches by artists known for documenting high-profile trials.

Overfelt reflects on his practice: “I use cars as a conceptual tool for exploring undercurrents that shape the slick packaging of the American Dream, despite its often painful and messy human reality.”
