A remarkable evening in Groningen for the premiere of Philip Glass’s Waiting for the Barbarians with @reisoperanl.
@alice.farnham.14 conducted a thrilling performance of a production of enormous musical and theatrical ambition. Director @guyweizman and choreographer @ronihaver have created something genuinely extraordinary, bringing together opera, dance and theatre with extraordinary intensity.
At its centre, Dan D’Souza was superb as the Magistrate, leading a formidable cast. The traditionally male role of Colonel Joll was strikingly reimagined for a female singer by @charlottehellekant whose vivid stage presence made her a genuinely chilling antagonist. The @noordnederlandsorkest were outstanding, bringing tremendous drive, colour and precision to Glass’s score, with superb work too from @consensusvocalis. The sheer concentration and commitment across the stage and pit were extraordinary.
Sam Brown, Artistic Director, and Rudy van Wijk, Algemeen Directeur, also deserve enormous credit for bringing a project of this scale and ambition to the stage, and for the remarkable company they have assembled around it.
It was particularly special to see Alice on the podium after what has been an eventful few weeks, conducting with all the energy, precision and generosity that make her such an exceptional artist and colleague.
Huge congratulations to Alice, Guy, Roni and everyone at Nederlandse Reisopera. One of those nights in the theatre that stays with you.
The production now continues to Breda, Leeuwarden, Enschede, Utrecht, Zwolle, Maastricht, Apeldoorn and Den Haag, with the final performance at Amare on 31 October.
Please note that the previously announced performance in Emmen on 3 October has been cancelled.
