Movement weekend for @ithqdetroit

every @honchopgh campout is different, but the throughline never changes: it’s the place where i get to reform, incubate, and fully embody new identities. the solar eclipse + new moon on our wednesday start date cracked a portal open for all of us. “you are the universe fully realized, don’t let nobody else tell you otherwise” - as @djnita poignantly closed the weekend with.

3 years ago: navigating life after a period of sobriety. 2 years ago: healing from a breakup and coming out as a pup. this year: stepping into my identity as a healer and massage therapist after changing careers. no place on earth makes you feel this happy, gay, and free—operating at your highest frequency, connecting deeper than the default world ever lets you. it’s a blender of inertia and connection, accelerating your life path and your bonds with chosen family.

this year was harder, weather plus massage commitments meant less time on the dance floor. but i’m learning every honcho doesn’t have to look the same. it doesn’t have to be 10 loads in 18 hours or a new honcho boyfriend every day. sometimes it’s no loads, topping 7 guys and getting fisted instead. lol balance.

highlights: side quests with all of you, sorbet runs with my t-boys, being a muscle asian trio with @ebitdadx and @hypanthiun, @scotia_trax’s set!, full skibidi brain rot with @yazzus__ (never laughed harder than with/at @corakoala), melting people’s pain away and putting them to sleep with my hands, and watching acquaintances turn into real friends.

so grateful for this utopian queer project. can’t skip it! 😭💖 only shot a roll and a half before my camera’s battery door fell off, probably for the best, saved it from another water damage repair. til we’re together again on the magical lands next year 🏕️

Today is my last day at my first dream job. After six years at RA, next week I’ll be starting a new journey as a staff writer at @pitchfork.

Most people in my life know this, but I come from a long line of NYC club kids. My grandmother was a regular at Paradise Garage (and still parties today). There are periods of my life in which my aunt is at Nowadays more than I am. Sometimes I think my family cares more about my rare DJ sets than my big profiles!

With that said, being able to write about my favorite DJs, dance floors, and clubs around the world has been so special. I found my voice on the dance floor, and I want to thank everyone who bore with me as I scribbled notes on my phone at 3 AM at festivals or recorded one too many videos at the club because I was sure I’d use the footage for a story one day lol.

I started out fresh out of college just wanting to write about ballroom, footwork, and East Coast club music in a sea of coverage about white dudes. When we were stuck at home during COVID, writing reviews and historicizing these genres became more important than ever to me. Then, after the pandemic, I realized that I also wanted to capture the chaotic essence of nightlife in NYC (and all around the world) in case it disappeared again. (RIP Office Hours)

Anyway end of an era, but also the continuation of a lot of the same fun stuff❣️
