Congratulations to our 2026 Outstanding Educator Award recipient, Kristen Vu ’08 & ’16! 🎉

Kristen knows that preparing students for a career in health care means teaching more than technical skills. It means helping them build confidence, think critically and understand the responsibility they carry into every clinical setting.

Kristen graduated from Grand Valley in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy. In 2009, she received a medical dosimetry certificate from the University of Texas before returning to GVSU to earn a master’s degree in medical dosimetry in 2016. Now as an assistant professor and program director of Grand Valley’s medical dosimetry graduate program, Kristen prepares students for a field where professionals help design radiation treatment plans for cancer patients, working to target tumors while protecting healthy tissues.

Kristen sets a high bar for her students, and she works alongside them to help them reach it. One of her former students shared, “Kristen’s guidance and encouragement have made a huge impact on my education and my confidence as a future dosimetrist.”

🎉 Congratulations to our 2026 Young Alumni Award recipient, Ashley Melton '24!

Ashley is the founder and executive director of Parenting Pathways, a community for parents rooted in healing, education and hope. With a bachelor’s degree in health information management, Ashley is fueled by the belief that a parent’s mental health can shape a child’s emotional development. Rather than separating the needs of parents and children, Parenting Pathways focuses on those connections. Through workshops and resource guides, Parenting Pathways helps parents strengthen communication, build emotional resilience and connect with local support networks.

Alongside her nonprofit work, Ashley serves as a health information management technician at Trinity Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, where she supports patient documentation, care coordination and quality processes. She also gives back through board service with LeadHership Impact, an after-school program serving girls of color, and Young Nonprofit Professionals of Grand Rapids, where she supports programming and outreach for emerging nonprofit leaders.

“I am most proud of the impact my team and I have been able to make so far,” Ashley said. “The families that we connect with and the feedback we receive make everything worth it.”
