INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY • October 12, 2026

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We honor, celebrate, and give gratitude to the Piscataway and Nacotchtank (Anacostan) People, the Indigenous Peoples’ on whose ancestral homelands we gather at GW and in Washington, DC. Today is a powerful reminder that the stories, wisdom, and resilience of the first inhabitants of this land deserve recognition, honor, and celebration. This is a time to embrace diversity, heal historical wounds, and create connection that unifies us together across cultures. This is a time to Raise High, together, as OneGW 💛💙

Mark your calendar! Grounded in the visionary framework of José Esteban Muñoz’s Cruising Utopia, Dr. Z Nicolazzo, Rabbi Abby Stein, and Dr. Darin M.L. Stewart will explore radical trans futurity amidst intense political and social backlash. The conversation will critically examine how transgender individuals and communities can navigate the stark realities of “interest divergence” within modern institutions.

Keileen Estrada M.A., Human Development & Education, Organizational Leadership & Learning 🤍

What a transformative chapter this has been. From the late nights and early mornings, to moments of doubt, growth, resilience, and becoming, this journey changed me in ways I’ll carry forever.

As a first generation daughter of parents who came to this country and sacrificed so much for a better future, earning my master’s degree means more than I can put into words. Their hard work, love, and faith opened doors I once only dreamed of walking through.

Today, I carry this accomplishment not only for myself, but for my family, my community, and every little girl who wonders if she belongs in these spaces too.

I’m endlessly grateful for my family, my friends, my cohort, my professors @humanorglearning_gwu and every person who believed in me when I was still learning to believe in myself. Thank you for pouring into me along the way.

And with time, who knows what comes next…

Special thank you to @ericjovel_ 📸 for capturing these moments so beautifully on both film and digital. Your eye for the little details and the way you make every photo feel timeless means so much!

HOL SPOTLIGHT.

Is critical thinking enough?

Shaista E. Khilji, Department Chair of Human and Organizational Learning (HOL), challenges us to think further, arguing that critical thinking alone is not sufficient in today’s complex, rapidly changing world.

For us in HOL, this hits home
Our work sits at the intersection of people, systems, and change-where learning is not just about analyzing problems, but about understanding human dynamics, navigating uncertainty, and transforming how individuals and organizations make meaning.

For organizations, this means that analysis alone won’t drive effective decision-making or change. Leaders must move beyond logic to engage with context, relationships, and the lived experiences of people.

What’s needed? A deeper, more human-centered approach to learning one that includes reflection, empathy, and the ability to engage with complexity.
