If you ever get the chance to visit the studio of Grace Kim (CC ‘25), you’ll be met with a gallery wall chock-full of work—prints of classic art historical pieces, frames from graphic novels and anime, Polaroids of friends, fan art of athletes, and most notably, the artist’s own work. Her paintings, stunning in both the vividness of their colors and the detail and realism of their subjects, combine references from the Western art history canon she grew up in academically, and from artistic influences drawn from her Korean heritage. While she is indebted in many ways to these references, Grace aims to disrupt rather than conform to any particular status quo, and while her work presents as anything but a joke, humor is not absent from her practice—just ask the giant LeBron cutout occupying the wall of her studio’s pillow corner.
