ARTIST TALK | CONFÉRENCE D’ARTISTE

🟤 October 1, join us with Montreal-based artist and writer Hannah Berger as she discusses her practice and shares her experiences from her time as artist-in-residence at Venezia Contemporanea in Spring 2026.

While in Venice, Hannah explored the etymological origins of the word “ghetto” in reference to the site of foundry waste on top of which the Venetian Jewish Ghetto was originally built. Taking shape across multidisciplinary approaches, Hannah’s research is being further developed into a project that combines sculpture, installation, and fiction writing. Considering the historic roots of the ghetto and its present reality, Hannah’s work explores how we write and rewrite our own histories.

This artist talk will be moderated by MJM’s Artistic Director, Alyssa Stokvis-Hauer. A Q&A will follow.

🔗 Registration is free, but advanced registration is required as capacity is limited. Reserve your spot via the link in our bio.

Hosted by @yiddishlandpavilion and @venezia.contemporanea, this residency was made possible with support from the Betty Averbach Foundation and @canvascompend. This artist-in-residence program was an inaugural partnership between the Montreal Jewish Museum, Yiddishland Pavilion and Venezia Contemporanea.

🇮🇹 Fresh from her artist residency @venezia.contemporanea, Hannah Berger shares some highlights from her time spent in and around Venice’s historic Jewish ghetto.

1️⃣ A day trip to Ferrara, Italy. About an hour from Venice, home to the Museum of Italian Judaism and Shoah, and to a continuous Jewish population since the 13th century.
2️⃣ Arbit Blatas’ bronze relief sculpture, “Monument to the Deported,” in the Venetian Ghetto.
3️⃣ View from residency in the Jewish Ghetto. Confined to a small area in the city, Jews in the ghetto were forced to build upwards.
4️⃣ Letterpress in the studio of printmaker Gianni Basso, Venice.
5️⃣ Abbas Akhavan’s “Entre Chien et Loup,” Canada Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
6️⃣ Reading an anthology of Italian 20th century fiction on Lido Beach.
7️⃣ The Spanish Synagogue in Venice. Designed by Baldassare Longhena, completed in 1980.
8️⃣ Fragments in gothic script excavated from houses, 14th century-ish. At the Murano Glass Museum.
9️⃣ Hannah and a big fresco of St. Anthony preaching to the fish in Padua.

Hannah Berger’s artist residency is made possible with support from the Betty Averbach Foundation and CANVAS. This artist-in-residence program is an inaugural partnership between the Museum of Jewish Montreal, @yiddishlandpavilion and @venezia.contemporanea.

Behold! I’ll be unveiling the world’s first coin-operated bilingual fortune telling machine @pulpbooksmtl this Saturday from 11-5 pm. Yes, it’s a 1950s USPS stamp vendor I’ve stripped, fixed, repainted and repurposed. Yes, it requires quarters to operate—either US or Canadian. No, it’s not messing around—scientists have proven its clairvoyant accuracy 10000%.

Unfortunately, I can’t show you specific fortunes themselves; the magic connection between receiver and fortune can’t coexist within social media. I can, though, show you some of the 31 international writers, cartoonists, artists, weirdos and friends who’ve penned fortunes for it.

Find them above. And find me (and the machine, and select contributors) at Pulp this Saturday.

Introducing @yiddishlandpavilion 2026 artists-in-residence:
Hannah Berger @h.bergs

Hannah Berger is a Montreal-based visual artist and fiction writer who works in a variety of media. Her work is strung with common threads of history and the excavation of language, often employing historical and experimental methods of making and storytelling. Hannah was recently awarded the 2025 Montreal Fiction Prize.

In Venice, Hannah is exploring the etymological origins of the word "ghetto" as referring to the site of foundry waste on top of which the Venetian Jewish Ghetto was originally built. This research will further develop a project that combines her sculptural installation practice with her fiction writing in a series of archaic-looking bronze tablets that display an experimental short story. The story, pressed into bronze tablets in bas relief, will draw connections between the origins of the ghetto and its present reality, clashing with the ancient look of its substrate as a comment on
how we write and rewrite our own history.

Hanna's residency is conducted in close partnership with @venezia.contemporanea and is kindly supported by @museemtljuif
