Protecting our natural spaces starts with people who care enough to make a difference. At the Great Fall Festival at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, I connected with Hackensack Riverkeeper, an organization working to protect our local waterways, wildlife, and the communities that depend on them. Supporting organizations like these helps ensure future generations can experience and enjoy the natural world around us. #HackensackRiverkeeper #HackensackRiver #EnvironmentalEducation #NewJerseyNature #watershedprotection

We had a long day Saturday prepping to perform Paul Pinto’s “River Songs” in Hackensack’s Foschini Park. But once the show started, it flew by in no time at all. It was a magical musical event is a very cool spot. And it was a joy to be able to share the experience with members of the Stop Shopping Choir family, members of the Hackensack Riverkeeper, the fabulous Gelsey Bell, and Larissa Belcic, who envisioned the piece in the landscape. (In the interest of privacy, I didn’t tag those with their backs to the camera. But tags can be added if you wish.)

Today I had the opportunity to join the Bergen County Audubon Society team for a nature walk at Van Buskirk Island in Oradell, New Jersey. What makes this place so fascinating is the way history, engineering, water, and wildlife all intersect in one landscape. The remains of the Hackensack Water Company’s New Milford Plant date back to 1882, with major expansions in 1898 and 1911. The facility operated for more than a century before closing in 1990. Today, the same Hackensack River that once supported industry and supplied communities with drinking water is surrounded by habitat supporting birds and other wildlife. It’s a great reminder that when we explore the natural world, we’re often exploring much more than nature itself. The landscapes around us carry stories of the people, technology, waterways, and ecosystems that shaped them. That’s one of the things I enjoy most about leading and participating in nature walks: helping people look at familiar places a little differently. You may come looking for birds, but you often end up discovering the story of the entire landscape. @bergencountyaudubon @bergencountyparks #BergenCounty #Birding #NatureEducation #NewJersey #environmentaleducation

An Evening on the Hackensack River Tonight I had the opportunity to join members of the Bergen County Audubon Society and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority for a pontoon cruise through the Meadowlands. From the water, the landscape takes on a completely different character. We passed beneath historic railroad bridges, watched trains move across the river, took in the Manhattan skyline, and spent the evening looking for birds and other wildlife. We recorded 24 bird species during the cruise. What struck me most was the contrast. Here we were, essentially in the shadow of New York City, surrounded by major transportation infrastructure and industry, yet the Meadowlands was alive with biodiversity. That is what makes this place so special. The Meadowlands isn’t simply open space between cities. It is a dynamic ecosystem, a place where people, industry, water, marsh, and wildlife all exist side by side. A beautiful evening of exploration, learning, and appreciating one of New Jersey’s most remarkable landscapes. #HackensackRiver #Meadowlands #BirdingNewJersey #EnvironmentalEducation #BergenCounty
