Looking back at the photos from a recent talk, beyond realizing just how much I talk with my hands 😂, what stuck with me most was what happened after I stepped off the stage… This was the first time I had spoken so publicly about my past, loss, rebuilding, meaning and purpose. And something unexpected happened. It wasn’t what I said that stayed with me most. It was what people shared with me afterward- A young man who had lost his best friend came up to talk to me about grief. A woman told me the talk made her feel reconnected to her birthplace. Someone asked me to speak to college students. Others came looking for business and career advice. I remember thinking: How could people listen to the same 30-minute presentation and walk away with such completely different things? Maybe our stories meet people wherever they happen to be in their own lives. Last year, I gave a keynote to business owners about marketing, social media and what to expect in 2026. As the founder of my marketing and PR firm, Hacker Communications, talking about business comes naturally to me. But this time was different… I opened up how leaving my comfort zone wasn’t so uncomfortable, tragically losing both of my parents in my 20s, rebuilding my life, finding connection in unexpected places, and why some of life’s most difficult and unexpected moments can ultimately shape us the most. For years, I’ve helped businesses find their stories and figure out how to share them. I didn’t expect that opening up and sharing more of my own story would connect with people in this way. Yesterday a friend from outside of the communications, marketing and public relations industry asked me, “What is @cprs.vancouver?” From my experience, CPRS is about community, career and knowledge advancement, and producing events where we learn from, and empower each other with knowledge and skills as our industry is constantly pivoting. I’m really proud that I was voted in as president to lead a board of 25 individuals who each bring a unique perspective- some work for the government, or agencies, and in-house at various companies. We all bring our own individual life and professional experience to our role, making this 2026-2027 board super strong. There’s something really special about the Vancouver community that I didn’t find in Toronto- There is a strong local bond that Vancouverites have. It’s also a multicultural city with big world thinking, and a deep, communal respect and love for the local business scene. For me, this organization is about the people and how we’re all working together to advance our careers and ourselves. As an agency owner for the last 10+ years, I’ve mentored and led junior practitioners and collaborated with senior practitioners, and no matter how advanced our skills are, we all shared ideas and learned to collaborate. Please reach out to me if you know anyone who has a good business story to share, whether it’s about success or failure, because we love learning from, and connecting with others.
