Bits from last Wednesday at Hackney Depot 🏓

We tried learning a new serve. Let’s call it a work in progress.

Two tables last week, and hopefully three this week, so even more room to play.

See you Wednesday, 7 to 9pm. Free, all levels, just turn up. Bring a mate.

Hi everyone! 🏓

This is Hackney Depot, where we’ll be playing on Wednesdays.

Unlike last time, Wednesdays are our free play sessions. We already have two tables, and we might even have a third one by next time.

This is separate from our social events, which will stay at No Dice like last time.

Come and play tonight from 7 to 9pm. It’s free and open to everyone!

Volunteer With Hair & Care🧡

If you’re a stylist or salon looking to get involved with a social impact cause within your industry, and become a part of a growing community, come and volunteer at the Hair & Care workshops!

Each month, we offer free hair workshops to blind and low vision women and girls, teaching them practical skills and styling techniques to boost their confidence, independence, and self-expression.

But this education goes both ways.

We know that many of our blind and low vision participants have expressed feeling anxiety or hesitation towards accessing salons and hair services. To bridge the gap, we’ve been growing a network of hairstylists who volunteer at the workshops.

In turn, Hair & Care equips volunteers with accessibility training, such as inclusive language and guiding, tools they can bring back to the salons to broaden their clientele and welcome a new community through the door.

If you’re interested in exploring this opportunity more, head to our LinkTree where you can find the link to register interest 🔗

July workshop recap🧡

This month’s July hair workshop, supported by @authenticbeautyconcept and @denmanbrush , was themed around creating up-dos using scrunchies to style and fresh flowers to accessorise.

Held each month at the Hackney depot in East London, our workshops take a tactile, sensory-led approach, with volunteers using guided gesturing and inclusive language to talk through hand motions, which helps participants build confidence and muscle memory that can be a transferable skill beyond the session.

We know that alongside textural differences across hair types, participants arrive with varying levels of confidence, too. So every theme is adaptive, with open encouragement to play and experiment, letting each person decide just how far they want to challenge themselves.

Since 2019, Hair & Care has supported over 600 blind and low vision women and girls, and we’re always looking to reach more of the community. If you’re blind or low vision, and interested in learning to care for and style your hair, please come along to one of our sessions!

All our workshops are completely free of charge and you can book your place at any of the available dates on our website with the link in our bio!

Thank you to our incredible sponsors and all our hairstylist volunteers who enable us to deliver these workshops free of charge. We couldn’t do any of this without you 🧡

Workshop Highlight✨

Earlier this month, we held our much-requested flower crown workshop - a summer-inspired theme that also draws on our founder @annacofone’s work with Lana Del Rey, and her iconic flower crowned looks over the years.

This theme involved a specific focus on tactile exploration - an important feature in all our workshops - but one especially integrated into this session.

For blind and low vision people, fine motor control is closely linked to independence, underpinning everyday tasks - a skill that strengthens with practice, and is often used in occupational therapy.

In this workshop, it allowed participants to make distinctions between various textures, structures and colours of the tools and accessories they were using. Not only does this build confidence, it gives participants the information to make their own creative and stylistic choices.

While themed sessions like these are really creative and fun, they also build invaluable skills and dexterity that carry into everyday life. Being held in-person, our workshops often function in a shared group activity format, that also helps to strengthen sense of belonging, community, and connection.

Our Hair & Care workshops are free of charge - happen every month - and can be booked via the link in our bio 🔗
