London based hacking group dedicated to showcasing acoustics and instrument building, physical controlling and the interesting uses of sound

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Just announced!
IKLECTIKA 5th Edition
24 & 25 October
Programme TBA soon!

For our final weekend in our current space, IKLECTIKA returns as a two-day gathering of artists, musicians, labels, publishers, thinkers, friends and the wider community that has shaped IKLECTIK.

IKLECTIKA has always been more than a festival. It is a space to meet, exchange ideas, listen, experiment and imagine together. At a moment of change for IKLECTIK, we want to bring our community into the room, not simply to say goodbye to this chapter, but to dream collectively about what could come next.
Across two days, expect live performances, talks, conversations, installations, DJ sets, food and time to connect.

The weekend will also mark a belated tenth anniversary for @hackoustic, a collective of sonic hackers exploring acoustics and instrument building. Hackoustic and IKLECTIK share a long history, and IKLECTIK has long been its spiritual home, so it feels especially meaningful to celebrate together.

This is our last event in this space, but it is not the end of IKLECTIK. Every ticket directly supports IKLECTIK as we move into our next chapter. We are deeply grateful to all the artists and participants contributing their time and work to make this possible.

Let’s celebrate everything we have created, and imagine what we can build next.

Tickets link in bio.

To flâneur is to travel and explore, mostly by foot.

Other transport methods are acceptable.

Taking 2 large 3dprinted sound sculptures to their first outing a while back!

These objects create syncopated and regular rhythms as they roll eternally.

Inspired by the vinyl #runoff and #thebeatles #sgtpepper

As always, huge props to @hackoustic ❤️

From Stop to GO! A big big thank you to the 69 supporters who have allowed us to raise what we need to continue our series this Autumn.

Some nice words from the comments on our crowdfunding page:
- Great memories from Daylight Music and many more to come - Simon
- 15 years is an amazing effort and testament to the quality of incredible artists and venues you work with. Long may it continue - Stuart
- Daylight Music is one of the best events in Leytonstone! Keep up the good work - Hilary
- Keep up the great work. The world needs more promoters and opportunities for musicians like you! - Frazer

This was our 6th Crowdfunder since our 2021 reinvention or return. It is always a big ask when we reach out to community for help. It's very touching that people want to support us and want us to continue.

To re-cap our two attempts at major (year long) arts funding have been unsuccesful. We will continue to apply for long term support alongside exploring other options for the survival of the series.

For the immediate future the Crowdfunder remains open - any additional support will help with the substanical costs of delivering our music-tea-cake based utopia this Autumn.

Best wishes,

@littoralpenguin & Team DM

📅 A date for your diary - Daylight Music will return on September 27th at St John's Leytonstone. Full details to come later this month.

It’s 2025. In an ever-changing world our series is a haven, a musical hug, an escape, a place to experience wonder. For this to continue we once again ask our community of friends, family, audience and artists for some help.

'Transcendental way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Inspiring and uplifting' – Yvonne from Bloomsbury

In what continues to be a challenging time for live music we once again open a Crowdfunder to continue the fundraising for our Spring/Summer/Winter seasons in 2025. It’s the most direct way for anyone to support or perhaps give us a financial thumbs up for a past event you’ve particularly cherished.

We have been lucky that the series has been supported once again by Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants, but this cannot be our only source of income so we have to find money from multiple sources whether that be from door income, café profits or merchandise.

We need to raise money in advance for hiring the venue, bringing in a sound system with a van to transport it, and paying an experienced engineer who will set up and pack it down. Then there are all the weeks of preparation to make the events as good as they can be. We also want to make sure we can financially compensate our musicians for their time and transport, which cannot come just from the Pay-What-You-Can door entry.

'Incredible , continuity, uplifting, soul moving, holistic, wonder inducing and mindful of making adaptations for disabled patrons - thank you!' – Anna from Canterbury

Rain or shine, storm or snow, with or without electricity, we’ve been there – and with some help from this fundraiser we will continue to do so this year.

Thanks for reading and supporting,

From your last music adventure with @hackoustic Orchestra: @anaberkenhoff @gawainhewitt @frazermerrick @vulpestruments and @timyatessounds, composing music using data gathered from the audience, using interactive technology to create immersive soundscapes, improvising over audience generated scores and more.

Thanks @downatthefront for the video.

Music, tea and cake.

Today we’re taking you on an afternoon of music and sound discovery, including live instrument making, from 12pm at @stjohnleytonstone, a stone throw from Liverpool Street.

Imagine a science class where you can eat cake.

Grab the tickets via a link in bio to get to the venue faster or get them on the door.

You’ll meet:

@Hackoustic Orchestra (theatre and sound artist @anaberkenhoff, artist working with music, sound, sculpture and technology @gawainhewitt, @frazermerrick, inventor, workshop organiser, Design Technology teacher, composer and a creative director @vulpestruments, and founder of @Hackoustic, sound artist, inventor and educator @timyatessounds) who will be composing music using data gathered from the audience via interactive technology to create immersive soundscapes.

Composer, sound designer @frazermerrick who uses field recording, circuit-bending and instrument-building to create carnivalesque experiences which explore the act of play.

He’ll present a hidden world of sound with the Photon Smasher, the handmade microphone that turns light into sound.

Selena Kay and Cerys Hogg - an experimental electronic duo KOGG @koggmusic. They will perform music from their forthcoming debut album Mechanista.

KOGG create music with off-centre melodies and elastic rhythms using instruments both ‘real’ and homemade, as well as field recordings and live video, including excerpts of Béla Bartók’s 100 -years old wax cylinder recordings of folk singers.

Composer, improvising guitarist and sound artist @craig_scotts_lobotomy, playing in between, whose work focuses on the tension between human and machine-made music.

Craig is blurring the perceptual lines between what is considered organic and artificial, function and malfunction and intention and error.

Your favourite community of makers and instrument hackers from @Hackoustic and us invite you on an extraordinary adventure in London @stjohnsleytonstone tomorrow at 12pm.

You will connect, share new sound and ideas within the space and make instruments with the Hackoustic team which you can then play as part of the Orchestra in a Hackoustic Cacophony.

You’ll meet @anaberkenhoff @gawainhewitt @frazermerrick @vulpestruments and @timyatessounds who will be composing music using data gathered from the audience, using interactive technology to create immersive soundscapes, improvising over audience generated scores plus more!

Tom Fox, also known as Vulpestruments, is an inventor, workshop organiser, Design Technology teacher, composer and a creative director at Hackoustic collective.

Fox was our guest artist on previous events, showing his impressive skills in assembling instruments from recycled and everyday objects.

Among his creations you can find a tennis racket with banjo strings, Kora (a traditional West African instrument combining the elements of lute and harp), musical pendulums and countless others.

Tim Yates @timyatessounds, a founder of @Hackoustic, sound artist, inventor and educator who’s involved in promoting instrument making on an international scale.

He says: “My aim is to open up perceptions about the ways we interact with and experience sound beyond conventional music and musical instrument paradigms.”

Yates has co-run many Hackoustic events around the UK that proved popular among both the creators and the general public.

Having also been involved in research and development for @drakemusicorg - a national arts charity working in music, disability and technology, Yates helped reimagine what accessible instruments are.

This will be an afternoon of hands-on wonder.

Reserve the tickets via link in bio and come over early to secure a good spot. Doors open just before 12pm.
