ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: Hadi Lateef · @hadellle

The same curtain. The same light. Five people who couldn’t be more different. At Practise Hours 5, Hadi shot the room like a yearbook; one backdrop, a cast of characters each showing up as no one but themselves. Shot at @h5_____lab

In his words:

“The experience at Practise Hours 5 was something I did not expect, because at most photo op sessions it’s one person taking the lead and others shadowing, but during this event everyone from creators to models to designers was able to collaborate and coexist in the same space at the same time.

As far as my creative approach, I wanted the photos to be a collection that appreciated and celebrated the uniqueness of each individual that showed up on the day, and hence I went with a yearbook portrait kind of approach: the same background, but several unique characters, personalities and fashion; and honestly, the set added that vibe.

More than looking into the theme too much, I was able to freely express myself, and the models were also able to showcase their true selves rather than a version where they’re asked to portray someone; and that genuineness is what I wanted to capture.”

No brief. No client. Just practice.

We run these sessions so artists can make something with no client attached and no box to tick. @shama_mua , a makeup artist who approaches the face the way a painter approaches a fresh surface, took that and ran. Here’s what the last session gave her:

As a painter I treat every surface with the same curiosity. The face is one of my favorite canvases, growing up I always viewed makeup as this ritual, not necessarily to abide by beauty standards but to literally paint, to have fun.

This obsession birthed my interest in SFX and editorial makeup. The last practice hour session was one way I got to experience that artistic freedom. To paint, to express and to literally wear art.
