Stories have the power to open young minds to the world around them, inspiring conversations about social, political, and environmental issues.

In an online panel discussion led by USMC Continuing Education in November, five celebrated children’s authors discussed how their works tackle these important themes and how literature can be a catalyst for sparking meaningful discussions with young people.

Last winter I had the pleasure of doing a talk at University of Toronto, School of Continuing Studies. The talk was on Ocean Literacy - of course!

Well at that talk I had the good fortune of meeting Michael Salvatori, Director of Continuing Education, @ustmikes_oasisinthecity at @uoft. He was excited to connect because he had a brilliant idea for a new program.

Well lo and behold the program is a GO and not only am I participating, but a few friends are joining as well! I am very excited to be participating in Contemporary Issues Through Children’s Literature. These amazing authors will also be guest speakers for this 6-week program: @naseemo, @jgcanada, @trilingualme.moitrilingue, @hadleydyerwrites and @rabia_reads

My session is on Wednesday October 9, from 6:30 - 8:30. We will have a lively chat exploring children’s non-fiction books as powerful tools to build environmental literacy.

Hope you will consider registering for this amazing program!!

Happy January! My first post of the year and I thought I would sum up my favorite picture books published in 2023. I’ve read so many lovely stories this past year and I have high hopes for 2024. I often pick books that leave a lasting impact, ones that have a deep lasting impression on me! Do you feel the same about anything you’ve read this past year? Let me know!

Walking Together: reminds me to be grounded and connected to nature and those around me.

The Hidden World of Gnomes: makes me happy and wishing I could live with the gnomes.

Oliver and the Night Giants: a beautiful nod to those that see the world slightly different than others.

My Baba’s Garden: shows the beautiful relationship between grandmother and grandchild. Truly touching and hit home on multiple levels.

The Sharing Book: my family loves camping and the sense of community it brings. This book is the perfect example of just that!

Maybe A Whale: navigating a tradition after loss. A lovely story of healing while keeping memories alive.

Angus Is Here: for every person that has ever lost a beloved pet. This one has me in tears every time, simply wonderful.

Thank you for following along on my book journey this past year!

Losing a pet is always so sad and as a parent it’s hard to know how to handle the loss with young children. In Angus Is Here by @hadleydyerwrites and @paulcovello you will find the perfect book to read with children after a loss, not only if a pet but for anyone in that child’s life. It’s a delicate story told in such a gentle way. If you have had a death in the family I highly recommend this book.
