POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Did you know that the state of North Dakota has produced 20 Major League Baseball players across their history as of 2026? The first was catcher James "Truck" Hannah in 1918 with the Yankees, while the most recent one was pitcher Jay Flaa, who made one appearance for each of the Orioles and Braves in 2021.

Out of these 20 players, outfielder/first baseman Darin Erstad played in the most seasons with 14, followed by pitcher Rick Helling and first baseman Travis Hafner with 12 each. Erstad is the state's all-time leader in games played, hits, doubles, triples, stolen bases, batting average, and bWAR, while Hafner leads the pack in home runs, RBI, and OPS. On the pitching side, Helling leads in almost every category, but Matt Strahm is the leader in appearances and saves.

Only Erstad and Strahm have been selected to the All-Star Game, the former earning that honor twice. Erstad, Helling, and catcher Chris Coste are the only ones to have played on World Series-winning rosters, while Flaa also appeared for a team who went on to win the Fall Classic but did not pitch in the playoffs. Erstad is also the only North Dakotan to win a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger, winning the former three times.

The more former big leaguers I talk to, the more I realize how often baseball parents are focused on the wrong scoreboard.

The team name. Rankings. Exit velo. Another lesson. Playing up. Being “ahead.”

Those things can matter at the right time. But they can also distract us from what our son actually needs right now.

Reps. Development. Learning how to fail. Understanding the game. Being honest about where he is. And eventually wanting this badly enough that we’re not the ones driving the whole thing.

I pulled 8 quotes from former MLB players I’ve interviewed on the Chasing Baseball Dreams Podcast because I don’t want parents collecting more opinions.

I want us getting better at deciding which advice deserves weight.

That’s a much different thing.

Travel ball parents always ask the same two questions. What’s actually good about it? What’s actually bad?
⠀
Travis Hafner has a simple answer. The good: you get reps, you play with real competition, you get humbled, and you find out what you actually need to work on. That matters.
⠀
The bad? Depends on the parent. And Travis is blunt about it. He doesn’t do year-round travel. He doesn’t hammer tournaments every weekend. Two to three tournaments a month, two practices, and he intentionally stops. Gives his sons time for other sports. Time to practice on their own. Time to breathe.
⠀
That’s the difference between travel baseball and the Machine’s version of travel baseball. One builds players. The other just builds bills.

If you’re stopping at all, it’s probably to hear about how Travis Hafner got his nickname. Let’s get that out of the way first. When Travis arrived for spring training in 2003, his new teammates couldn’t decide what to call him. One camp called him “Project,” believing he was still a work in progress. Another called him “Donkey,” due to his lumbering gait when he ran. Travis suggested that they simply combine the names – which they did, settling on “Pronkey.” A short while later, the superlative syllable was dropped, and “Pronk” was born. Now, on to Travis’ fascinating origin story.

Travis was valedictorian of his class at Sykeston High School in North Dakota. He didn’t play a single game for his high school baseball team – that’s because Travis had just seven classmates, and his school didn’t have one. He grew up on his family’s farm outside of Sykeston (pop. 105), though his mind was usually elsewhere: “I was hitting rocks all the time, even when it was in the winter. I’d get in trouble because they were rolling over them with the lawnmower. [It] was fun just to go out and hit rocks and pretend you were in World Series games.”

Not having a team made things difficult for the kid to get noticed. He primarily played in American Legion ball in nearby towns. The MLB draft came and went the year he graduated, and he was set to play college ball in the NAIA. But he managed to get an invite to a Braves tryout in Mandan, where he did well enough to score a $1,000 free-agent offer from Atlanta. He passed but was given a valuable list of junior colleges that he could attend to gain more exposure. He picked Cowley County Community College in Kansas, the only school that didn’t offer him a starting position right off the bat. Having to earn his role appealed to Hafner, and the next year he was drafted…by Texas in the 31st round.

Before signing, he led Cowley to a JUCO national title, then began a six-year climb, never becoming an elite prospect. He was traded to Cleveland before the ’03 campaign in a minor transaction. Within a couple of years, he was one of the most dangerous hitters on the planet.

Here is Travis Hafner on his 2001 SP Future Watch card.
