💭 halloween book tag by @pages_of_lit ⋯ i wasn’t tagged but i do love a book tag and what a perfect way to celebrate halloween!!

🎃 the great pumpkin: books perfect for october — graveyard shift by m.l. rio; gallant by v.e. schwab; what moves the dead by t. kingfisher; rewitched by lucy jane wood.

🧛🏼 vengeful vampires: cozy romance or atmospheric fantasy — i will always choose fantasy, so no surprise here!

🍁 hollowing wind: next book on your tbr — probably the isle in the silver sea by tasha suri or the everlasting by alix e. harrow, i need another lady knight in my life.

🪦 gruesome graveyard: number of books dnf’ed this year — surprisingly, only 1!

🧶 creative costume: your halloween costume this year — um… my pjs?

🦇 blood suckers: books that sucked you in from the first chapter — bury our bones in the midnight soil by v.e. schwab; the second death of locke by v.l. bovalino; the starless sea by erin morgenstern; these violent delights by micah nemerever.

Q: what are your plans to celebrate halloween?

i’m getting thai takeout and watching horror movies with my mom! we’re going to watch weapons, i’ve heard it’s one of the best horror movies of this year so i’m very curious. it’s also teddy, my poodle’s birthday! he’s 13 years old today but will always remain a puppy to me. i’m also celebrating the release of everybody scream by florence + the machine it’s playing on repeat and my signed cd arrived and it’s beautiful and i can’t wait to experience these new songs live aaaaahhh! basically i’m having the best halloween ever and i hope you do too!

listen - i wish i was that type of book girlie who could make a set tbr and stick with it. i so desperately wish i was. but, unfortunately, i am not as cool as some of you are :(

it seems like as soon as i tell myself “oh, i’m definitely reading this one next” my brain throws that desire out the window, completely turns the notion on its head, and makes me pick up the most random thing on my shelf instead.

so let’s be clear: this is NOT my fall tbr. (hopefully i can trick my brain by repeating this)

these are just some books i’ll be choosing from when i feel like reading something dreary and ominous to go along with the next few despondent months we have left of the year.

a handful of the books on the last slide have nothing at all to do with the macabre and creepy but i’m just so excited to read them and, therefore, had to be included in this post.

also, looking at this photo makes me very much grateful to have the friends i do in this circle of book lovers. thank you to olivia (@olivviabooks) and gray (@book.girlfriends) for gifting me books and to kayla (@kaylajosefine) for sending me a beautifully signed copy of her novel. i’ll protect them with my life and i promise to read them soon ♥

just realized i haven’t posted a #whatthisweek in a while. here’s a photo dump ft. one of the two bookcases i have in my room that i love so much 🥲

꩜ currently reading
after @aydsaysobooks mentioned ‘so sad today’ by melissa broder in her ‘books to help with heartbreak’ post, i knew i had to pick it up. the book so far is decimating my expectations of it in the best way. (also many thanks to my girl @bizarrofic for putting me on to this book in the first place 🥺)

❀ currently listening to
‘yerba buena’ by nina lacour on libby! although the beginning was emotionally rough to listen to, i’m liking the pacing of the book so far.

𖠋 currently watching
aside from me binging ‘elite’ with @laurenslibros, my brother and i have also been watching ‘modern family.’ new comfort show unlocked.

❊ looking forward to
my dad & brother have been building a gazebo in the backyard these past few months and it’s nearly finished! so i’m very much looking forward to spending my last days of summer out there reading 😩

🍄 what are you looking forward to reading this week?

🌈 #QueerYourYear Check-In! 🌈

We're halfway through the year! How's the challenge going for you? I'm having a blast. Honestly, it's exceeded my wildest dreams. I've connected with so many of you because of it, and I truly appreciate your thoughts, your recs, your reviews, your conversations. It has been a joy to revel in queer lit with you.

To celebrate the midway point, I asked 10 readers to write a few words about a favorite book they've read for the challenge. I am so delighted by this mix of books—romance, speculative fiction, a graphic memoir, a campy retelling of Dracula, and more. There's something for everyone. Huge thanks to these fantastic humans for sharing their words—go check out their accounts, and these wonderful books!

And please come chat about your favorites in the comments.

The Third Person, Emma Grove, (rec'd by @babylibrarians)
A phenomenal graphic memoir about mental illness, disability, and transitioning that takes place almost exclusively within the confines of a therapist’s office. Despite its sprawling, almost 1,000 pages, it’s a propulsive, emotional read that I couldn’t put down. Claustrophobic, insightful, & beautiful.

Sorrowland, Rivers Solmon (rec'd by @hagreads)
Sorrowland is perfect in its explorations of survival, monsterhood, family, transformation, and trust. It is an underworld, mycelial masterpiece.

A Minor Chorus, Billy-Ray Belcourt (rec'd by @emzi.reads)
I was utterly compelled by the protagonist reacting against the self-protective institution of academia by following a creative writing vision, one which prioritizes the voices of his community which academia has traditionally silenced.

Just By Looking at Him, Ryan O'Connell (rec'd by @books_are_beyond)
This book explores themes of internalized ableism, addiction, being a son/father, love, emotions vs. expectations of being gay enough in the context of wanting or not wanting a monogamous relationship, identity and relationships, and identity vs. work so well!

Booklist continued in pinned comment with image descriptions.
