everything happens for a reason… except I didn’t really have a choice.

when I started taekwondo at 3 years old alongside my siblings, my afternoons became a broken record:

eat. sleep. school. tkd. repeat.

I remember the times I failed a belt testing or lost an important fight, and how easily it would shatter my identity. school, studying, and even making friends were already hard enough—so there were plenty of times I wondered, why not just quit?

and growing up, there were bullies, teachers, and certain people who made me feel like I wasn’t capable enough. for a long time, I thought I had something to prove to them.

fast forward to now:

I’m still a martial artist—not because I beat taller opponents or because I have the best achievements.

the art form and sport of taekwondo fortified my work ethic, my mentality, and, more importantly, my identity.

somewhere along the way, I realized my biggest opponent was never the person standing across from me. it was myself.

I had to lose and find myself countless times. I had to overcome my own doubts, insecurities, failures, and expectations before I could understand the true value of everything taekwondo gave me.

and maybe proving certain people wrong felt good—but proving to myself that I could keep going meant a lot more.

I also wouldn’t be the martial artist I am today without my siblings. we grew up training, competing, winning, losing, fighting, and pushing each other through all of it. whether we realized it or not, we helped shape one another.

if I could talk to 3-year-old me now, I’d just hope he would say,

“i’m proud of us.”

I am Luke “Kyu-Jin” Ra.

happy taekwondo day 🥋
