We want to invite our community out this Saturday, October 24th, from 12–4 PM at Loko Ea in Haleʻiwa for our CDRT Storm Debris Clearing Meeting.

And we want to make one thing VERY clear — this is NOT another meeting where we sit around, talk story in circles, discuss the same problems, and leave without a plan!

WE ALREADY HAVE A PLAN, AND WE’VE ALREADY STARTED PUTTING IT INTO ACTION! 💪🏽

We’ve identified ʻohana and farmers who are still struggling with the aftermath of the Kona Low storms. We’ve already begun working on one of the farms, and we intend to keep going until everyone on our list has been addressed.

Now it’s time to get ORGANIZED!

Through HiRiskManagement.com, we are working to make sure each ʻohana and farmer needing assistance is registered, their needs are documented, and their cleanup projects are organized and scheduled.

This Saturday, we’ll be going over our plan of action, the families and farms needing assistance, the equipment and resources we have available, and the projected timeline for getting everyone taken care of.

And the best part? This is a COMMUNITY-RUN effort!

We are a small grassroots group of people and organizations who have decided that instead of continuing to wait around for help, we’re going to work together and make things happen.

🤝 Here’s how we’re coming together:

🌱 FarmKineTings / HI Risk Management — Organizing the families and farmers, tracking needs, coordinating resources, and helping get projects scheduled.

🚜 Hawaiian Brown Kross — Taking the lead on our machinery operators and equipment crews.

💪🏽 Inside Outreach, led by Josue — Providing volunteers and boots-on-the-ground labor.

🌿 Hoʻopili Hua — Assisting with volunteers and community support.

🤝 Hawaiian Council — Working with us on funding support for farmers’ fuel and supplies, as well as providing debris bins.

We’re also bringing together local farmers, machinery operators, and community members who are willing to contribute their time, skills, equipment, and resources.

THIS SATURDAY IS ABOUT ACTION, NOT JUST CONVERSATION.

Months after the March Kona Lows, many of our Waialua and Haleʻiwa community members are still navigating recovery. Our communities stepped up when existing systems fell short, but there’s still work to be done.

This recovery gathering is an opportunity to come together, share what’s still needed, identify gaps, and begin organizing around community-led solutions.

No talking in circles. No starting from scratch. Just building on our relationships, lived realities, ʻike, and collective power already within our communities.

CALL TO ACTION: Mālama Pohaku Lanai/Lanaikekane 🌺🙏

Pōhaku at Kaiaka Bay needs our help! A friend and I cleaned up the wahi pana (special place), put up a boundary, and posted protocols (no climbing, no littering, respect this wahi pana).

Tree roots and heavy growth are cracking the base of the rock. We need hands to:

1. Cut middle tree branches & haul away the green waste/trash.

2. Trim invasive growth on top of Pōhaku to stop structural damage.

Spread the word, especially if you’re from the Waialua moku! Tag anyone who can lend a hand! 🤙

Pohaku Lanai/Lanaikekane is a large balancing stone on Kalaeoiupaoa Point. A large oval shaped stone 18 feet across is balanced on a smaller base, standing about 10 feet high in all. This is said to have been used as a lookout by fishermen in the region. When fish were sighted, the stone was beaten with a wooden mallet, and the resulting hollow sound was sufficient to gather together the fishermen of the village. The Hawaiians say it was a stone which floated from Kahiki (Source: Ulukau.org).

Five months after the historic Kona Low floods, Waialua High & Intermediate School should have been fully repaired and ready to welcome students back. Instead, students and educators are returning to a campus where critical flood damage remains unaddressed.

WHIS was there for our community when we needed it most. It served as an emergency shelter as floodwaters surrounded the campus. Classrooms and the library were inundated. Athletic fields disappeared beneath water. Even the shelter itself ultimately had to be evacuated as conditions worsened. Through it all, school staff, first responders, and community volunteers stepped up with extraordinary courage and compassion.

Our students deserve the same commitment from the state DOE.

Natural disasters happen. Delayed recovery is a policy choice. Schools are not just places where children learn—they are essential community infrastructure, emergency shelters, and anchors of resilience. When repairs are not completed in time for the start of school, it sends the wrong message about our priorities.

Our Waialua students, educators, and families have already endured enough. They deserve safe, fully restored learning spaces—and they deserve answers about why these repairs were not completed before the first day of school.

Mahalo to the North Shore Neighborhood Board Health & Disaster Committee, @oer.honolulu, @nwshonolulu, Dr. Laura Kong from @noaa International Tsunami Information Center, CARE Hawaiʻi, @papaolalokahi for bringing our community together for an important conversation on disaster preparedness.

This week’s meeting covered hurricanes, El Niño, and tsunamis as part of Module 2 of the Hawaiʻi Hazards Awareness and Resilience Program. Experts led an in-depth discussion on the science behind these hazards and how our communities can prepare. As this hurricane season is expected to be above-average and as we are still learning from the Kona Low storms, these conversations are valuable as we prepare before disaster strikes. Mahalo to everyone who participated and to our partners for organizing this important conversation.

WAIALUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — A controversial proposal to build a gondola on Oʻahu’s North Shore is officially off the table after Gov. Josh Green signed House Bill 1881 into law Friday.

The new law prohibits private passenger or cargo ropeways — including gondolas, cable cars, ski lifts and aerial tramways — from being built in Hawaiʻi.

The legislation was introduced by North Shore Representative Sean Quinlan in response to a proposal to build a gondola at Kaukonahua Ranch on the slopes of Mount Kaʻala. The project drew years of opposition from residents, Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners, environmental advocates and community organizations who argued it would damage the area’s cultural significance, natural landscape and agricultural character.

“The North Shore has been under siege for years,” North Shore Neighborhood Board Chair Racquel Achiu said. “We have developers at every turn eating up our ag lands… You can’t come in here and buy ag land assuming you’re going to be able to do whatever you want. You’ll be held to compliance and appropriate stewardship.”

We reached out to Kaukonahua Ranch for comment. A representative declined to comment at this time.
