It wouldn't be proper October if a visit to @halepele was not included. Went to try their Halloween Menu which consisted of the two drinks pictured! I had the Abracadaver which is an innocent combo of coconut, banana, cinnamon and rum served in a fancy Skull glass!

@opheliadarkly had the Polyjuice Punch which is a little apple, a dash of falernum, squeeze of lime, with bisongrass vodka and Jamaican Rum mixed all together in a little cauldron of Spooky delight with some fire 🔥! The presentation on these def enhanced that good ol spooky month!

Fire Drinks at Hale Pele

I’ve long said nobody does drinks with fire better than Portland’s Hale Pele, and our two recent visited indicated that if anything they’re leaning even further into this being a central focus of the guest experience. There are few things that please the senses more than cinnamon on fire, and Hale Pele does this old school without the aid of high proof alcohol in spray bottles.

The fire-making process starts by taking croutons soaking in lemon extract and putting them in half of a spent lime shell before lighting on fire, then taking a healthy scoop of ground cinnamon to make the flame spark mightily. We were repeatedly told the flame on the drink would go out in two minutes but none were less than double that - watch your nose while drinking.

We tried several fire drinks on our visit, including our longtime favorite Jet Pilot that’s the best of its kind I’ve had anywhere, rich and spicy and boozy but not too much so. This was paired with the Coconaut, a Jeff Berry original with a simple but delicious blend of rum, lime, and coconut. Having two fire drinks ordered together meant that both were lit on fire in unison. Wonder twin powers, ignite!

Recommended to us was the Signal Fire, a creamy blend of coconut, peach, and overproof rum. This drink was truly outstanding and the dose of cinnamon on top made it even better. Also excellent was another Hale Pele original called B.F.T.D. (“Big Freaking Tiki Drink”) that somehow blends rum and cherry liqueur with guava, pineapple, and lime juices to great effect. The delightful Krakatoa is served flaming too, an homage to the Indonesian volcano. This bold grog includes grapefruit along with teasing amounts of coffee, giving you another jolt.

We can’t praise Hale Pele’s fire drinks enough; fire at all other tiki bars simply pales.

It’s my good friend Justin’s birthday today, and he asked me to make him something from the latest drop.

I’ve been wanting to play around with portraits inspired by some of our local tiki spots, so Hale Pele in Portland felt like the perfect first one.

If you’ve never been, ordering one of their flaming drinks can set off a whole little storm inside the bar — lights flicker, thunder rolls and smoke comes out of the walls. It’s awesome and somehow never gets old.

Forty-two is in the books! Had a wonderful day with my eternal partner in crime @batladyrielle, with stops at @pipsoriginal and @gravy_restaurant_pdx for breakfast, followed by games at @wunderland_games . Dinner was a fantastic shepherds pie at @kellsportland, and we finished the night with amazing drinks @halepele.
