memorias en ramala, palestina —

i used to invent love whenever it was needed. when i walked alone along the riverbank, or whenever the salt in my body rose, i would invent the river…

Snapshots from Wild Hedges: Waste/lands with @alwahat.collective , the exhibition from our spring residency at @mediamatic_ 🌿

Building on our ongoing investigation into colonial and nationalist representations of wastelands, this five-meter textile installation engages so-called “invasive” species as a wild hedge: entangled, adaptive growth rooting itself in disturbed soils amid a changing environment.

The eco-printed weeds (sowthistle, narrow-leaved ragwort, nettle, cleaver, mallow, red valerian) were collected locally in Amsterdam, pounded collectively into the fabric, and later overlaid with the interlocking grids of darning, a historical gendered Dutch practice of young women repairing clothes. Through the intersections between the prints and the embroidery, the installation thinks how urban practices of maintenance and planning often overlook existing ecologies.

The series of cyanotype images developed by @gdemczuk , depicting the same plants, are exposed in-situ along with the shadows of ornamental plants growing nearby. Toned with the plants themselves, these weeds are brought into the production of the image, contesting isolated botanical drawings of plants, such as those in the Moninckx Atlas functioning as the Dutch East India Company’s trade ledger.

The accompanying publication developed by @half.bird traces how so-called “invasive” species, artificial water/land boundaries and urban ecologies are shaped by histories of colonial trade, classification, and control.

The exhibition will be up for 2 more weeks!

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for the opening of 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘴: 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦/𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 by Al-Wah’at Collective الواحات (@alwahat.collective)

It was a beautiful evening, even in the heat. Al-Wah’at introduced the research developed during their residency at Mediamatic, followed by presentations from Linda Kopitz, Alaa Abu Asad, and Ameneh Solati (@amna_solati), and a shared conversation with the audience around wastelands, urban ecologies, counter-cartography, and care.

𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘴: 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦/𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 looks at plants growing in the cracks of the Oosterdok, a site built on reclaimed land and shaped by histories of VOC trade, water management, and plant classification. Through an eco-printed canvas and cyanotype prints the installation asks how plants once moved, cultivated, and valued ornamentals through colonial trade can later be renamed as invasive, unwanted, or waste.

Thank you to Ailo Ribas (@half.bird), Gabriella Demczuk (@gdemczuk), Areej Ashhab (@areedge), the panel speakers, and everyone who stayed with the conversation.

The exhibition is open to visit from 1–14 July.

Introducing the speakers for Wild Hedges: Waste/lands

On 24 June, the opening of Wild Hedges: Waste/lands by @alwahat.collective will be followed by a panel conversation on the language around wastelands, the politics of green planning, water, and counter-cartography practices.

The conversation brings together Linda Kopitz, Alaa Abu Asad, Ameneh Solati, and Al-Wah’at Collective to think through how urban ecologies are shaped, named, maintained, and sometimes overlooked.

Wild Hedges: Waste/lands is developed during Al-Wah’at Collective’s residency at Mediamatic and turns towards plants growing in the cracks of the Oosterdok: along canal docks, train tracks, and abandoned plots.

On 24 June, we present Wild Hedges: Waste/lands by Al-Wah’at Collective الواحات (@alwahat.collective)

Developed during their residency at Mediamatic, Wild Hedges: Waste/lands is a site-specific continuation of the collective’s ongoing research into ecologies labelled “wastelands” and species labelled “invasive”.

In Amsterdam, the project turns towards plants growing in the cracks of the Oosterdok: along canal docks, train tracks, and abandoned plots. Through a site-specific textile installation, Al-Wah’at Collective traces how so-called “invasive” species and urban ecologies are shaped by histories of colonial trade, classification, and control.

The opening is followed by a panel conversation on the language around wastelands, the politics of green planning and counter-cartography practices with contributions from Linda Kopitz, Alaa Abu Asaad and Ameneh Solati (@amna_solati )

We’re welcoming artists-in-residence: Al-Wah’at collective(@alwahat.collective).

Formed by Ailo Ribas(@half.bird), Gabriella Demczuk(@gdemczuk), and Areej Ashhab(@areedge) in 2022, Al-Wah’at is an artist-research collective committed to growing communal practices of care and repair in ecologies labelled “wastelands”.

Their work seeks to counter colonial and anthropocentric narratives around arid lands and invasive species by engaging with a diversity of knowledge, be they local, folk, scientific, or more-than-human, to promote a deeper understanding of these ecologies, especially in light of climate change. 🌵

Their project Wild Hedges investigates the ecological and socio-political complexities of the prickly pear cactus and cochineal insect across multiple geographies and temporalities, including Palestine, Mexico, and Spain. Addressing colonial practices that perpetuate cycles of harm within human and more-than-human communities, Wild Hedges delves into the material possibilities of the cactus and the cochineal in weaving, dyeing, printing, and cooking, using mythology and rituals to reaffirm entanglement with the land amid enclosure and dispossession.

During their residency at Mediamatic, they will be adapting this work to the landscape surrounding our Biotope. Don’t miss out on their design research and public programming, including workshops, Meet the Maker sessions, and a final presentation during the third week of June in our historical Sluisdeurenloods. ✨
