Fotos: @halfdanvenlov

Midnight Waltz, a solo exhibition by Halfdan Venlov, is on view at the gallery until May 16. The photographs suggest stories without closing them, allowing the viewer to inhabit the emotional space of the image rather than forcing a conclusion. Immersed in a world of shadow, these darkly enigmatic images are emotional maps that resist the confines of rationalism and present a quiet alternative to a culture that increasingly loses itself in blinking screens.

Venlov photographs his subjects with a melancholic tenderness, revealing both the rawness of youth and its ine- vitable transition into adulthood. The camera stays close but never invasive. What emerges is a series of fragile, unresolved scenes: faces half-lit, bodies turning away, gestures that feel unfinished. The photographs suggest stories without closing them, allowing the viewer to inhabit the emotional space of the image rather than forcing a conclusion.

“The images, all composed horizontally, possess a distinct cinematic quality. There is a subtle but persistent sense of voyeurism running through the work. The viewer is positioned as a quiet observer, invited into situations that feel private, hidden, or only half- permitted to be seen. Venlov uses a spotlight to illuminate his subjects, lighting the scene in a similarly dramatic way as in a theatre or a movie set.” Midnight Waltz by Halfdan Venlov on view at the gallery until May 16. ‘Where The Red Fern Grows’ 5 Washington Street Glasgow G3 8AZ 20th - 24th March 2026 “The show is situated around an ambiguous theme that is constructed by both the works and the photographers that have been hand-picked by Mackenzie. The works themselves are all delicately interlinked, yet also find power in their individuality, from childhood bedroom interiors to flash-soaked images taken at the dead of night. Each of these images tells their own story, whilst being in poetic conversation with the images they are surrounded with. These images appear in constant flux, creating conversations with each other, the space and the current climate in which photographers are existing right now. These conversations can be found in the deconstruction and rebuilding of our thoughts of tenderness. There is also an ambiguous nature to the overall aesthetic of these images, but it is a beautiful ambiguity. This show is providing the space for photographers to display their works without the restrictions of institutional spaces. The aesthetic and conceptual value of these images and their curation is completely elevated by the form in which they take, ranging from constructed frames to artist-made silver gelatin prints; the perseverance to create work in a vacant world displayed by these selected artists is an aspect of the show that shines above all else.” Text by @noah_ringrose Curated by Mae Mackenzie and presented by @court_darkroom Photo: @saulcrumlish
