How small our planet is! This surprising realization came to me when we arrived in Ushuaia, also called The End of the World. As we sailed past Cape Horn and out through the Drake Passage my heart was raising. Since I was little this passage of fierce ocean seemed like an upassable 20m high waves barrier to the Antarctic. But we were lucky. Drake laid flat. Still, the force of those blue deep waters resonates. Two days later we saw land: Antarctica.

This immense land of ice made such an impact on me, and the ocean is bursting with life! We saw so many whales - breaching humpbacks, endless flukes, and bubble-net feedings until we lost count. Penguins were cuter (and smaller) than expected. Leopard seals are fierce killers. And seabirds absolutely badass. All of this is under threat as the ecosystem here is such a fragile balance and we depend on it all. Terrifying as the ocean keeps warming up.

To experience the 7th continent with the one and only Ari Friedlaender and Ryan Reisinger, two of my favourite marine biologists and our A-team Hallgrim Haug and Øistein Block Haukeland is just a dream come true and life changing really.

The sun turning the other way, the sounds of whale blows and humpback song, the detonations of glaciers calving and the sound of ice stays with me. So excited to relive all of it as we start editing Deep Code.

Let’s not forget how fragile this small planet is. As I try to reintegrate into daily life I am so immensely grateful for the beauty of it all. 🌍🧊🐋
