No one expects the world to stay in spring. We accept that trees go bare, days get shorter, and thousands of geese quietly resign and relocate without giving anyone two weeks’ notice, a corporate exit strategy many of us only dream of…

We call it a year. Yet we expect ourselves to bloom year-round.

What we’d call a season in nature, we often call a personal failure. We compare our winters to everyone else’s summers, their promotions, their engagement photos, and their suspiciously well-lit morning routines, apparently unaware that half of humanity is being held together by caffeine, denial, and a password they forgot they saved three years ago.

And somewhere in the middle of all that comparing, posting, scrolling, and wondering why everyone else appears to have life figured out, we’ve become so focused on being seen that we’ve forgotten to see everyone else around us.

If our culture is full of people desperately seeking validation, maybe the answer isn’t demanding more of it for ourselves. Maybe it’s giving more of it.

Encourage your coworkers, your family, your friends, your significant other (I hope that’s a given?), and your barista, even if they handed you a $9 cold brew with the death stare and energy of someone delivering a medieval curse upon the entirety of your bloodline.

Tell people you’re proud of them. Tell them their work matters. Tell them you’re grateful to know them. Some people might assume you’re being fake or doing it for self-serving reasons. Let them. You don’t have to convince everyone — you just have to mean it.

We spend enough time wondering whether we’re enough. It seems to me like a pretty good use of our time to remind someone else that they are.
