#rizahmed #hamlet is a intimate, harrowing, and dramatic tale about a son exacting revenge on his fathers death, figuring out who you are in context of your family’s corruption, and is a decent intersection of Shakespearean storytelling and South Asian culture. Riz Ahmed is impressive as Hamlet & is backed by a equally strong supporting cast (Joe alwyn, shiba chaddha, and art malik). While the film struggles with its pacing and ability it balances all it explores, it’s worth a watch to see a dream film made by its filmmaker.

Still thinking about last weekend’s incredible post screening conversation at the @angelikafilmny and hearing Riz Ahmed speak so passionately about this new take on @hamletmovie .

This version feels urgent, intimate, and incredibly alive. It takes a story we think we know and finds something new and haunting inside of it. @rizahmed brings so much depth, vulnerability, and intensity to the role, and hearing him talk about why this story matters right now made the experience even more powerful.

If you love film, theater, Shakespeare, or stories that stay with you long after the credits roll, this is one worth seeking out and talking about with your people. Curious to hear what everyone thinks if you’ve seen it already!

I was recently lucky enough to watch a preview screener for Hamlet, the new film adaptation of the Shakespearean play starring Riz Ahmed!

The movie also includes Art Malik (Claudius), Sheeba Chaddha (Gertrude), Avijit Dutt (Hamlet’s father), Morfydd Clark (Ophelia), Joe Alwyn (Laertes), and Timothy Spall (Polonius). Every single actor really goes above and beyond, and makes the language of the play feel engaging and approachable for any audience member through their performance.

I have tried my best to avoid spoilers, even though the story of Hamlet has obviously been told for a long time, because this movie does make changes to the setting, time, and reason for certain plot points.

By bringing Hamlet to the modern day, and utilising the sights and sounds of London, I personally found the emotion of Hamlet’s tale was amplified. The sound design and soundtrack were as much a character in the film as the locations and incredible acting. I felt the power and pressure of the London setting most when Hamlet first sees his father’s ghost, and follows him through the streets and alleyways at night until they finally speak - on a rooftop with the city skyline spread out behind Avijit Dutt’s silhouette.

Of course, I can’t avoid mentioning Hamlet’s ‘To be or not to be’ monologue, powerfully delivered by Riz Ahmed while speeding through the city in a car while dodging (or dancing with) death.

As a film, I would rate the experience 4/5 stars. As someone who enjoys Shakespeare (my favourite play to read and watch is Much Ado About Nothing), but is by no means an expert on the Bard’s work, I would also give this adaptation 4/5 stars. As I mentioned, there are adjustments to the story, but overall I finished the film feeling excited to have seen such an interesting take on this classic tale.

If you have read or watched Hamlet before, or have never even heard of it, I would highly recommend watching this adaptation. I would also love to hear what you think!

🍿 Hamlet is showing in select theaters in the USA!

Last weekend, The Miss Indie had the chance to attend a special screening of the new Hamlet adaptation directed by Aneil Karia, followed by a Q&A with Riz Ahmed, and it was nothing short of unforgettable.

This isn’t your traditional Hamlet. It’s a bold, modern, and emotionally charged reimagining set within a wealthy South Asian family in London. Every moment feels immersive, intimate, and alive in a way that’s hard to put into words.

If you’re looking for something fresh, thought-provoking, and visually striking - go see it!
For those in the US, this weekend is your final chance to catch it on the big screen.

This is one you don’t want to miss.
