After 10 years of faithful service, I recently replaced my @yaesuusa ATAS-120A.. With another new one from the great folks down at the @hamradiooutlet in Sacramento.

During the life of the old unit, I had to replace the whip 5 times due to it snapping off at the base. Now, you would think I was always hitting a tree branch or some other obstacle causing the whip to snap off. Unfortunately, on two of the occasions that the whip snapped off, I actually heard it happen and was able to stop the vehicle and recover the broken whip. After inspection, I noticed that the whip material doesn't seem to be very strong, and snaps fairly easily under moderate force.

The last whip I placed on the old ATAS was a Larson whip. I had to very slightly drill out the whip hole on the unit for fitment. That whip lasted over 3 years, until the ATAS motor gave up a couple months back.

Yesterday, the new ATAS gave up its whip as well. Nothing was struck, it just snapped off. I drove from our place, 40 minutes into town, and back. Known route, nothing to strike the antenna. Why does this keep happening with the stock ATAS whip? Vibration? Lateral force?

I always keep my old antennas for parts. I grabbed the whip from my 2 generations back old ATAS and went to insert it into the top of the NEW unit.. The whip hole diameter on the new unit had to be drilled out a bit to accept a Yaesu whip. Slightly different sized holes. I wonder if they have played with different spec whips over time? Well, keep going, still needs improvement on the whip quality (strength).

All that said - I LOVE MY ATAS-120A! Performance on the air is fantastic for the size and type of antenna ✅

I would enjoy less maintenance cost over time to keep it running. 📶😎

Happy to hear your thoughts or experiences with your ATAS 😊👍🏻 73!!

Here we have a @jeep owned by @my_offrd_adv . Installed this @yaesuusa radio. Acquired from @hamradiooutlet . Installed the handheld controller under the roof molle rack. Placed the main unit on the top of the rack. And the antenna is on the hood. Very detailed and clean install. Very impressed with how everything fit in its slots and lined up. Thank you for the work sir. I greatly appreciate it.

This is the 4th @hamradiooutlet store that I have visited. This is the Winter Springs, FL store. I have been to the stores in Atlanta, GA, Woodbridge, VA, Anaheim, CA, & now Winter Springs, FL.

Any awards for visiting a certain number of stores, @hamradiooutlet?!

As always, I experienced friendly folks, great customer service, and in stock items.

Sunset this evening Off-Grid in California.. The wildfires just south of us are sending ash and plenty of smoke up into our neck of the woods today. Keeping an ear on @calfire_aeu via the radio. God bless all those folks working the fire lines this week. Hottest week this year so far. HYDRATE 💦👨‍🚒👩🏻‍🚒✈️🌲⛰️🪓🚒🧯
