I knew Hana was an artist when she walked up. Maybe we all have an inner sense of something that connects us. She’s used to making self-portraits of herself for her work, but it was a different experience being photographed here. She said, “It looks like me. I recognize myself.” ➡️ This. Every. Time.

This is my piece “The Gaze” (16x20”) inspired by an interview I did with my Chicago Asian Ink mentor, Hana Rafee. Thank you to everyone who joined the Final Showcase, thank you Chicago Asian Ink for connecting me with so many amazing artists, and finally, thank you Hana for sharing your experience with me.

Today we’re sharing another community testimony about the #TEAACHAct! This testimony comes from Emma Saito Lincoln with @jasc_chicago, and was illustrated by Chicago artist @hanarafee.art.

"I believe the TEAACH Act is an essential step toward dismantling the systemic racism that plagues our country. If, from a young age, Illinoisans only associate “American History” with the people, places, and events that represent the experiences of the dominant group, they absorb the implicit message that all other histories are not and can never be “American.”
...
I don't have a single experience I wish to share, but rather an uncountable number of "where are you from?" "no, where are you _really_ from" "wow, your English is so good!" "what nationality is your husband's name?" and similar comments. I recall one time in the lead-up to the 2016 election, a friend casually using the phrase "real Americans" in conversation with me to distinguish people like her from people like me. I have endured microaggressions in the workplace throughout my professional career, including but not limited to: being confused for other non-White colleagues repeatedly, being mocked for selecting a Japanese name for my cat, being stared at while using chopsticks to eat my lunch, and being expected to serve as the expert on all topics Asia-related. While these experiences may seem minor in comparison to incidences of physical aggression, they have a cumulative effect that has been well documented as causing exhaustion, anxiety, and depression. (Continued in comments)”

Many students, teachers, and community members have shared personal testimonies about why the #TEAACHAct is important to them. Read Meenakshi Parihar's powerful testimony, which was illustrated by Chicago artist @hanarafee.art in the image above.

"When 9/11 occurred, I was only 2 years old, and I remember going to play in our local playground. When my brother and I arrived, all of the children and parents at the park left immediately to when we arrived. As an Indian American, this memory sticks very heavy with me, as only a two year old, I experienced racism for the first time, by people 40 years older than me. It was humiliating.

As an Asian American, I felt as though a lot of my history was underrepresented, and unless I did my own personal research, Asian American History was never taught in my classes. Being uneducated in a topic such as Asian History, leads to prejudice and misinformation in the future, which can cause all types of harm. With this act in place, it will help prevent situations such as these, and hopefully bring in a new, well-educated and respected generation."
