Our fifth birthday party wouldn’t be the same without the authors, poets, playwrights, performers, comedians, clowns, curators, historians, scholars, and otherwise critical and creative writers that fill our shelves and our space with so much life and heart! 📝💞 Please join us for an afternoon open mic celebrating our community of diverse talent with over a dozen local authors and performers sharing their work. Tickets are just $5 online or at the door! 🎟️ (link in bio) The program begins around 2 PM with headliners Jesse Bliss and Hannah Eko, followed by a roster of some of our favorite returning talent! MC Effie Spence will keep the fun going until 4pm. The open mic is now full, but come enjoy the show and maybe we can squeeze you in if there’s time. Timeslot sign ups are first-come, first-served beginning at 1 PM; when you arrive ask for the clipboard! 😎 📋🎤 Headliner Bios: 🎭Effie Spence @effiespence is an experimental filmmaker, actress, dancer and poet focusing on bringing audiences together with work that weaves her biophilia through the feminine lens and is heavily influenced by her Grecian roots. Each one of her works is created from research-based techniques as well as dream-work and vision-crafting. 🪽The Roots and Wings Project Founder and Artistic Director Jesse Bliss @jesse___bliss_ will share some words of inspiration followed by a performance from site-specific play THE JOY RIDE by Jesse Bliss performed by the incredible Darian Dauchan @ddhollerscholar @_theraw_project 👑📚Hannah Olabosibe Eko @hannah.eko is a Nigerian-American writer, book doula, and founder of The Lit Club, a cannabis-inspired creative community. Her work has appeared in Buzzfeed, Bust, Fractured Lit, and more. Hannah will be reading from “Cherophobia,” a section from her book Honey Is the Knife about fear of joy, ancestral trauma, and the rage that meets Black happiness.

Another first Sunday of the month, another excellent event! We served over 500 meals today, several dozen people got fresh haircuts and first aid services, and we handed out tons of supplies! Breakfast was fruit salad parfaits w granola and belvita cookies, lunch was pizza with 2 salads- our signature Mac park green bean chipotle one and a new invention called BLT salad. It’s RLY good. We also had brand new tee shirts, hats, socks, and underpants PLUS soap and wash cloths, baby wipes, full size deodorant, and more thanks to YOU lovely people!! Thank you!!! Obviously I won’t be slowing down anytime soon so if you want to help- keep your eyes here over the next few days, we have tons of stuff coming up, and Venmo Catherine-Schetina! I promise to make the absolute most out of every dollar 🫡🫡 Thank you!!!!!!! 💛💛💛🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I couldn't go to LA and not go to @redbirdla, one of my favorite restaurants. This is the best of modern American cuisine. Everything is fresh, seasonal, elegant, beautifully plated -- and delicious. I went there with two people that I never get to see enough of and that I love a lot. After introductions were made, we did a lot of catching up and then we could not stop talking. And laughing. I am a fortunate soul. 1. Grilled lamb belly - blistered grapes, fregola, labneh, mint, spiced walnut vinagrette 2. Chawanmushi - Maine lobster, enoki, charred scallion, sichuan chili oil 3. Red wattle pork chop - collard greens, polenta, mustard jus, nectarine mostada, oregon hazelnuts 4. Day boat scallops - thumbelina carrots, carrot top gremoulata, tangerine, gooseberry 5. My California girl @mel_olivia and I 6. @handcannon67, my forever ex brother-in-law 7. That taco truck, tho...! 🌮 🌮 8. ...and somehow, MPB made his presence felt.

We shared everything, thank God. And the sommelier made excellent suggestions. I went there with two people that I never get to see enough of and that I love a lot. I haven’t done anything with a group for my birthday since 2019. I got this crew to all come with me to see Fast X. I went to take a video of them and they sang to me over the credits.
