Just got back from the post office with this little beauty. A signed Old Waldorf Bar Days (1931) by author Albert Stevens Crockett. Big ups to the Carkhuff Family for getting this book and also big ups to me for not spending $500 bucks on this. 🤓 Ruby has an apprentice in the book workshop today and JoJo looks a bit overwhelmed with my collection. Maybe time to whip a few Klondike Coolers? Who wants one? More books on the way!

HerringFest ‘26 was a slightly more mellow affair than previous years, but I kind of liked it that way. And of course HerringMeister @philipsduff, who procured the Nieuwe herring fillets from @russanddaughters, brought his usual pizazz to the proceedings. Apart from the fish, we had the usual fabulous spread whipped up by the beautiful @sachsy (Coronation chicken salad finger sandwiches, I mean, COME ON!)… and we did some damage to a few pretty nifty bottles as well. Thank you to @stefanopileggi, who brought a spectacular @braulio.italia amaro from ca. 1950; @joanna.lin, who tasted us all on the new and exciting @drinkyoshi matcha liqueur; and @thisismattmagliocco, whose @michterswhiskey 10 Year Old Bourbon is welcome at any and every gathering. And congrats to Last Man Standing @handlebarsnyc, who finished things up with a dram of @glenfarclasdistillery 25 YO, eight and a half hours after we got started. Honey Dew

2oz Planteray/Plantation dark rum (or something else…)
1/2oz Navy-strength gin
1/2oz Cocchi Americano
1/2oz lemon juice
1/2oz simple syrup

Shake everything with ice. Strain into chilled rocks glass with crushed ice. Orange wheel.

Happy New Drink Friday! Today’s drink is the “Ampersand” - yes that piece of punctuation (&) that binds us all together- you & me, gin & tonic, rum & coke….the list goes on. The drink is hardly new - first appearing in the Waldorf Astoria book in 1935 - it is reminiscent of a Vieux Carré with its 3 equal ingredients (gin, cognac, vermouth) with an outside element to bind them - in this case curaçao and orange bitters. The drink is tasty - cherry and grape notes dominate with some vanilla -there is citrus on the nose but the latter flavors almost come across like a danish with a citrus and fruit filling-it’s very enjoyable sipper. I thank @pintsandpanels for starting me in this hunt with their cartoon of the cocktail. I also want to thank Nancy Upper who wrote a book on the Power Of Ampersand - the punctuation not the cocktail- and who spoke to Frank Caiafa @handlebarsnyc for his insight into the drink and who modernized it for today’s palate. While I didn’t follow all his suggestions and adhered more closely to the original -it was really great to have the background and his thoughts on how to use modern ingredients. I really liked this drink and will likely play with other brandies and gins to see what comes out. Cheers all!

Ampersand
ABV: 34%

Ingredients
1 oz (30 ml) Cognac - Hine
1 oz (30 ml) Gin (Old Tom) - Hayman’s
1 oz (30 ml) Vermouth (Sweet) - Cocchi Di Torino
2 dash Bitters (Orange)
2 dash Dry Curaçao - Pierre Ferrand

Directions
1. Add ingredients to mixing glass
2. Stir with ice until cold
3. Strain into a Nick and Nora glass
4.No Garnish (Frank recommends a lemon twist)
5. Enjoy ! 😊
