Fall overnight/day trip idea—Saint Paul to Red Wing by TRAIN!

Here’s everything you need to know about taking the @amtrak to Red Wing, Minnesota. It was less than $40 for the train tickets for me + my daughter (round-trip).

🚂 11:49 am: Depart Saint Paul’s Union Depot aboard the Borealis (kids are half-price, and families traveling with kids 12 and under board first). There’s no seating assignment; just talk to the conductor on the platform about which car to sit in. Sit away from the platform for the best river views.

🍂 12:37 pm: Arrive in Red Wing!

🛎️ Walk to the @stjameshotelrw + check in. The hotel is about a block from the train station. If you can’t check in yet, they will hold your bags.

🧭 Spend the evening + following day in Red Wing together.

Eat at @mandyscoffeecafe, @redwingconfectionery, @hanischbakery, and @scarletkitchenbar.

Stop at @fairtradebooksrw, Red Wing Shoes, Levee Park, and He Mni Can-Barn Bluff. (Everything is within walking distance of the train station + @stjameshotelrw).

🚂 5:47 pm: Depart Red Wing aboard the Borealis. Enjoy the sunset on the way home!

🌇 6:41 pm: Arrive back in Saint Paul!

Our road trip to Red Wing to visit @aloveaffairbookboutique was a delightful adventure. We started our morning with coffee from @frothncork. We didn’t realize it was the fall art festival in Red Wing, but it was serendipitous for us. We also needed to get some bake goodies from @hanischbakery. Their chopped apple fritter was insanely good, wow!

Even though it was 90 degrees, we had a great time. We definitely recommend making the trip soon!

Some places don’t just stay on a map—they stay in your blood. 🍂
For me, Red Wing, Minnesota is a second hometown. It’s where my grandmother’s house sat on 6th Street, where I spent entire summers listening to the trains rumble through town, and where three generations of women in my family grew up beneath the limestone bluffs.
I was back in Red Wing recently for my mom’s 64th high school reunion. Walking through the doors of the historic St. James Hotel—where I waited tables the summer after my freshman year of college—and standing atop Barn Bluff looking out over the river valley, I was reminded of why this stretch of the Mississippi River is so completely unforgettable, especially in the fall.
