Wow! Went to go see Arshay Cooper speak on Monday. An amazing and inspirational story from the streets of Chicago to rowing and how he transformed his life how learning to talk, really talk, and share with others can help bridge a lot of divides. There is also a movie! Thanks Dennis for the idea to go!

🇺🇸“Michael Bower (May 20, 1956 - October 20, 1991) was my BFF’s Robert Guidici’s (1963 - 1994) partner. He was tall, dark and handsome. He was kind and gentle. He moved to Oakland from Ohio where he grew up with two siblings, a brother and a sister.

I met Michael’s family when Robert and I brought Michael’s ashes home to Columbus to be buried. I still keep in touch with his sister and his mother and corresponded with her via mail until her death.

I remember the day Michael died very clearly. It was the day of the Oakland Firestorm (aka Oakland Hills fire) where over 3,000 burned and 25 lives were lost. I was living in San Francisco’s Twin Peaks neighborhood. As I was settling onto my deck with a magazine and an afternoon cocktail, I looked towards the East Bay and saw dark, ominus billows of black smoke.

Immediately, I picked up the phone and called Robert to check in. Were they safe? What could I do to help? I could leave right now and be there in 20 minutes. Robert assured me they were okay, from the fire anyway. The fire was close and they could smell the smoke and there were ashes falling around their house but there was no immediate danger.

Michael died later that evening and I would lose Robert a little more than two years later. They have been reunited for more than 27 years now. Cheers boys! And Happy Birthday Michael. Sure do miss you both.” — by Dennis Hanley @hanleyboys #whatisrememberedlives

— “I've posted this a couple times but today is World AIDS Day and I have an addendum to my story about Joseph. My story begins, "I only have one photo of Joseph." @stuart_theaidsmemorial posted my story back in 2018. This past July, I received a message with additional photos of Joseph. It was insta-tears. See, @hanleyboys knew Joseph and saw the post. He had more photos of Joseph and sent them to me. Here are two of them. Joseph was beautiful, the photo with the blue in the background is the boy I remember. They all were. An entire generation disappeared. @theaidsmemorial is a way to remember them.” — by Hank Henderson @hankinla #whatisrememberedlives
